Wonderful, enlightening read
This book exceeded my expectations! Dr Lipton is indeed an amazing teacher. There is much to learn about our own human bodies at the cellular level and how they work packed in this read. The bulk of the book is scientifically solidly based. At the end, he presents his hypothesis of what this all likely means, a hypothesis that I do not agree with in its entirety. It is very, very interesting, compelling, positive and does address many scenarios. In the book, he does, however, seem to skip over a bit by just saying that the behavior of cells is motivated by the desire to get smarter and that part of that process in evolution (not Darwinian) was some of the cell membrane going inside and forming cellular organelles. These statements are made without any real backup, just assumptions, a failure that the rest of his book does not have. He obviously also has a major dislike for the big business of Big Pharma (most everyone does). Insurance coverage business is not addressed, but I think it could be as is Big Pharma. This was a wonderful, enlightening and enjoyable book to read and savor. This is worth the money and your time to read.

Forget what you knew about the genes
One of the must-have classics. A great book to start learning about epigenetics, although it was occasionally a bit challenging for me to understand, but I managed to get through those chapters nonetheless. Dr. Lipton is a well-known authority in the field, so learning from the source is such a precious opportunity. The "truth", as we realized it, is shifting, and new discoveries are challenging our perspective and making us rethink what we thought we knew. A truly fantastic book that changes the course of history.

High time for a new approach to biology
With already well over 2000 Amazon reviews, what’s to add? Only this: that you can control your own physiology, and that there is a legitimate basis to question the current materialistic basis of modern biology. (And don’t let the “new-age” cover art put you off – this is a book based on REAL SCIENCE, and not on mysticism.) This book is biological revisionism – i.e., rethinking how cells react to their environment (which you can actually control) versus merely reacting to materialistic electro-chemical influences beyond your control. Revisionism is always controversial – from Copernicus to Einstein. For me, research into revisionist concepts always proceeds from unanswered questions – be it history, biology, or whatever is being considered. In the current instance (biology) my fundamental unanswered question (mirrored by the author at page 38) is, “how can a mere 25,000 genes (in the human genome) code all of the 120,000 different types of cells in the human body?” Seems like you’d need a separate gene for each cell type – otherwise how could one gene know which type of cell it was to develop into from among the 6 (average) different possible variants? The author attempts to answer this question by providing for the effect of environmental conditions on the development of cells. As for the book itself, it is an easy read (for a non-bio major) with easy to grasp metaphors. The only let-down was the pitch for “PSYCH-K” as the go-to method for accessing this new-found power of the mind. Perhaps the author is unable to tell us “how to do it” because no one yet knows – as stated by Dr. David S. Moore in “The Developing Genome – An Introduction to Behavioral Epigenetics” (2017) at pg. 189, “But today, we remain very far from being able to apply information about epigenetics in a practical way.” Suggested supplemental reads to accompany this book include: (i) “Return to Life” (Jim Tucker – read this one first); and (ii) “Morphic Resonance” (Rupert Sheldrake – read this one last). By then you will have discovered the rabbit hole – i.e. “how could all of this biological development proceeded in the absence of some intangible “field”? (“Return to Life” opens the door to unexplainable things in general – puts you in a frame of mind to find these intangible, but influential, “fields” at least plausible.)

An Enlightening Read Covering Science & Spirit
As I read Dr. Bruce Lipton’s book The Biology of Belief, I kept asking myself why I hadn’t discovered it sooner. In fact, I wanted to have read this 2005 book way before it was written. I wanted the biology part when I took high school biology in the late ‘70s or even when I took college biology a few years later. I would have wanted to read it again before I decided to get pregnant with my first child. In fact, this is a book that I would have had on my book shelf for frequent reference, so amazing is its message. Cell biologist and medical school professor Dr. Lipton is a crusader, putting into words what has taken him years of experience, study, and assimilation to understand himself. One Amazon reviewer, himself a physician, captures the essence of Dr. Lipton’s message when he wrote, “You can always tell the pioneers---they're the ones with arrows in their backs.” The bone of contention? Lipton’s suggestion (based on science) that the single cell is controlled by its environment not its genetic programming and the medium which controls its environment is the brain. “The mind’s energy (or thoughts) directly influence how the physical brain controls the body’s physiology.” If beliefs are just thoughts that we’ve had over and over, then our beliefs control our biology (whether or not these beliefs are true). Our thoughts produce the chemicals that influence the environment, therefore, our thoughts influence our health and happiness. What I most enjoyed: There are too many aspects of Lipton’s book to pick just one thing. For example, I was delighted to read science-based work that resonated with what I’ve believed for years. Positive thoughts have a healthy impact on our lives. Negative thoughts lead to negative feelings, increased sadness, depression, apathy, and disease. The biology was fascinating, unveiling that the membrane of the cell is the control center and not the nucleus. I love the attention he gave to universal energy and the concept that, “The universe is one indivisible, dynamic whole in which every and mater are so deeply entangled it is impossible to consider them as independent elements.” And, I appreciated his focus on conscious parenting and how important it is that parents teach their children patterns of thinking that will help them discover and grow, versus protective or critical patterns of thinking that will hinder their development and future success. How much did I learn from reading The Biology of Belief? Well, I took 12 pages of notes while reading my Kindle version, and I plan to buy a print copy for a permanent place on my bookshelf.

The book "The Biology of Belief" is one of the most important books that I read in my life, because I understood better how my body works at a cell level and the impact of the environment on cell behavior, since my birth and even my prenatal environment. Although I cannot indeed control the environment altogether, I am able to steer my reactions or response to what happens in the environment and ultimately introduce new habits and mindset in order to be and remain healthy. In order words, I grasped the power of my identity upon the energy that drives my life. Such awareness results from the book content clearly written with scientific arguments, facts, and data. I thank the author very much for his contribution in sharing his knowledge and also expanding the original book for the 10th Anniversary Edition with additional and relevant information. Fantastic!

I was curious to read this book as I have a very strong interest in the impact of the mind on our health. We’ve all heard of the placebo effect and it seems there’s an increasing amount of information coming out in recent years about how the placebo effect effect works, or more accurately, the emerging, fascinating science of epigenetics. The book lays out the story of how the prevailing theory of biology - the primacy of DNA - came about. The Central Dogma, as the author puts it. The author explains the history of various discoveries that led to this prevailing belief. Lipton was a medical school professor and research scientist, and noticed in his lab work that the environment of the cell played a central role in the cell's development. This led ultimately to the discovery that it’s not DNA at all that controls our biology; rather, that factors external to the cell - the epigenetic - are what control the genes. This gives us power to turn genes on or off, if we know how to harness the power correctly. We already know that foods can play a part in epigenetics. This book argues that energetic messages - such as those of our thoughts and beliefs - also play a part. It’s well written, and accessible. As a professor at medical schools, and experienced presenter, Lipton has developed a way of explaining his theories in a way the layman can understand.
