Dio Years

I first heard Heaven and Hell back when it was new and I didn’t like it. It just didn’t sound like the Black Sabbath that I knew and loved. However, I replayed the album recently and it hit me: this is possibly the greatest Dio album ever recorded! Why? Because he had Sabbath as a backing band. Bear with me here. It’s clear that Sabbath changed its playing style to better mesh with Dio’s voice and lyrical sensibilities. Gone are the devilish overtones and eerie guitar effects, replaced by a straight ahead hard rock sound. By dialing back on the macabre, they’ve got a slightly more accessible sound. The result is superb hard rock that fully supports Dio’s powerful voice. This greatest hits album is a fabulous way to explore what is, in essence, a Dio solo project, backed by one of the greatest metal bands of all time. And that’s not a slur against Sabbath. I deeply respect how they updated their sound to properly showcase this great vocalist.
