Q: Can you buy replacement heads for this? The velcro on the actual tool has worn off.

Don’t know, but if you can’t, try contact cement and add your own Velcro. I can see that my head will go in that direction.

Q: what is diameter of shank on the bowl sander

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking about. The diameter of the shank that rotates in the hook and loop head assembly is 6mm, except for for the two recessed channels in that shank which the retaining rings slide into and lock the shank into the correct position in the head assembly. The diameter in those channels is roughly 5.1mm. The channels in the shank seem to be an important requirement if you were considering other "shafted" accessories/parts to use with the sander (so that not only can the shank be inserted, but that it'll stay in place).

Q: Can regular mandrels like duragold work for this?

if the question is will the 2" Duragold Sanding disc work, have not tried them but reviewed them and don't see why not as long as they are hook & loop style.

Q: What size foam mandrel would replace this head? I've replaced the original with a generic 2" one online, but it's not turning the same.

When i replaced the mandrel with better bearing bought more expensive bearing. But i dont care for this type of sanding device with hook pads. I prefer 90° angle head pneumatic sander with roloc disc 3" vary the speed with regulator using 36, 80,120, 180 and 240 grits. I find this does a better job. Wear good respirator due to dust. This will cut sanding time in half.
