Great if you want to read the Greek. Don't get it for the English translation.
Many people reviewing this book mention the inadequacy or their distaste for the translation. I bought it to have a Greek/English edition to casually read from. If that is your intent I can honestly say it is well worth the purchase. The English translation might be clunky at parts but it maps out well onto the Greek phrasing, making it easier to identify unknown words and how the sentence structure works in Greek. I for example like to underline new vocabulary in the Greek and the English version and use the three-bookmark method. The design and format of the book is simple and sturdy. A nicely bound edition that needs no more praise than can be found in the other LOEB titles' reviews. The type-font is relatively clear. Not as clear as newer volumes, but not as muddy as most other older classical texts sold on Amazon.

The Audio CD is Best Enjoyed with a Prior Study of the Peloponnesian War
I would recommend the audio cd only for people with prior study of the Peloponnesian War. This is an ancient text and without the proper background, it will be difficult to listen to because so many of the references are obscure. The best overall study of the Peloponnesian War is Donald Kagan's book. He dedicated his career to the deep study of this conflict and his book is a modern masterpiece. Reading Kagan is great preparation for taking on Thucydides. I would next recommend "The Landmark Edition of Thucydides". It is by far the best edition to read. Its many footnotes and scholarly essays are absolutely first rate. Listening to Thucydides is a pleasure with the right preparation. Highly recommended!

Excellent seller!
Books were in advertised condition or better, well cared for. Seller may or may not be a "difficult teacher," but I would certainly return when looking for books again.

Excellent history explained.
The backstory for the battles in this war could be applied to every battle in every war ever initiated. The only difference being the reasoning has become more complicated. The human failings are the same.

Classic
A classic of history, Thucydides was a participant in the Athenian/Spartan conflict, and has quite interesting reports on the at time hot and other times cold war between the two factions. The first hand reports of speechs are quite interesting.Unfortunately, he didn't live long enough to finish the history.Picked up while free. Just over 8k locations.

Terrible, Incomprehensible Translation
First chapter is fine, but after that it reads like a BAD machine translation. Incomprehensible. One typical sample: "Neither party made any motion, but they remained confronting every other until the give up of the summer season, and iciness changed into handy before both of them lower back domestic." This isn't even the worst, just a purely random sample, and EVERY sentence reads like this after chapter one (at least as far as I went into the book). And yes, as others have noted, this translation includes Thucydides making multiple references to the "united states of america" or "usa." I went back to my old paper copy from college which, by the way, has the same cover art as this. Don't get duped like I did!

Still thrilling after 2000+ years!
Naval- and land-war strategy, diplomacy, plague, political science, values, and character. Comprehensive and well-written.

exile and the ravages of the Athenian plague and yet managed to record it in great detail.
The only pity is that Thucidides died before finishing the book. Xenophon takes up the tale again if you are frustrated by not knowing the ending of the struggle.'Peloponnesian War' is fascinating in its laconic objectivity and for its wide coverage of interesting times written by a man who was a general during the war, suffered from defeat, exile and the ravages of the Athenian plague and yet managed to record it in great detail.

Ripoff Beware
Ripoff of the Penguin Classics version. Just a scanned copy of the actual book, no TOC, no navigation, total ripoff.
