I spent some time online researching the best tool for grating ginger which I use for preparing various Asian dishes. After reading numerous reviews on a number of different graters, the Kinjirushi Steel Shark Wasabi Grater seemed like the tool best designed for my needs, but I was hesitant to spend the premium price on such a small and simple tool. However, after receiving the grater and sampling a piece of ginger on it, I had no reservations. The quality and the performance was exactly what I was looking for. What I especially like about this grater, is that it produces a creamy texture as the ginger is rubbed in a circular motion on the textured surface. There is no actual grated pieces of ginger but rather a creamy mush of sorts which easily blends with the sauces I make with it. I tried a single clove of garlic on it and it produced a wonderful cream of garlic that easily blended. I purchased the smaller size and find it perfect for home use. It comes with a small bamboo "brush" which I used to transfer the grated ginger and garlic to the sauce from the textured surface. Cleaning was as simple as running the grater under hot water. There was very little waste of product since I was able to hold the garlic and ginger until it was a little nub, without fear of hurting my fingertips.

This requires some elbow grease to use but it does a great job of making our tumeric and ginger into a paste. It is obviously well made and comes in a very nice package. We tried a lot of devices to deal with our ginger and this one definitely works the best.

If you have a source for real wasabi rhizomes like halfmoonbaywasabi com, then this is the right tool to grate it into a paste. like so many japanese things, the cost seems high until you have it in your hands and realize the quality justifies the price.

I exclusively grate raw ginger & garlic daily. I was excited to receive this new grater as I own several other types. I thought this would be my go-to over the others but still find myself grabbing my oxo handheld over this one. Maybe this is best for wasabi? I was expecting slightly better. It’s still good but for the high price, my handheld is just easier at grating ginger and garlic for some reason. Perhaps if this was designed with holes through it, it would be quicker/ easier. I like how it’s all stainless steel because putting plastic in the dishwasher & inhaling heated plastic is just not good.

If you grate real wasabi frequently, this is the best option bar none. It grates it twice as fast and does so more finely thank sharkskin or cheapo small metal graters, creating a much creamier texture. Pricey, but worth it (which, if you're buying wasabi roots to begin with, the price probably won't bother you anyways). Also very easy to clean. Just run some water on it, air dry the grating area, and store. I would recommend getting the smaller one instead of the larger one. Aside from being a third of the cost, the extra real estate to grind on is totally unnecessary.
