During Buddy Coles long and varied career, he worked with such luminaries as Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong and Rosemary Clooney. This collection features some of his masterwork, both leading his band and performing on organ. Includes many swinging standards and Cole Porter favorites.

If you like the sound of the Hammond, BUDDY will *own* you !!!
Buddy Cole is hard to explain...He wasn't your typical white roller skater/easy listening organist...nor was he exactly a groovy soul Jazz player... (as per Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff.)He was one monster of a SWINGER (in the retro/hip/ultra lounge) sense of the word...If any stylistic comparisons can be made, you might point in the direction of Wild Bill Davis perhaps...in fact, in many ways, the album is simply a master session player emulating the king of Organ Swing in a popularly fathomable style... (There's also a bit of Jackie Davis going on !)and at the time he played with the top Hollywood stars of the era (Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby) as a quintessential session man. Think Dick Hyman for example... not 100% original, but capable of playing convincing renditions of tunes in a wide variety of authentic sounding styles...This 2-fer-1 CD features two sweet sounding Hi Fi stereo Buddy Cole reissues from 1958... one with him on organ, another playing Cole Porter standards on piano... both originally issued on Warner. The organ selections include not only swingers, but some really lush and powerful ballads where he really brings out the true sound of a Hammond organ in ways that few others could (back then) and can today.-- He's backed by a light combo drummer, a swanky guitarist and a bass player who compliments him perfectly... though the combo work well, he's upfront most the time.Note: My favorite Buddy album is the long out of print POWERHOUSE but this one is right up there !Also a Buddy Cole original called TWO LITTLE GIRLS practically steals the show...He really has Wild Bill's style of shout and block chords down pat, yet at the same time is able to combine it with "legit" style theatre organ playing... the end result is Hammond pyrotechnics (as they would have been defined in that era) with a lot of gush, swish and swang...Buddy is no more... and there will probably never be another Buddy, so enjoy a rare Buddy reissue while you can !Also recommended: Ultra Lounge's ORGANS IN ORBIT (out of print.)Regarding Cole Plays Cole - - its more in a Liberace style pops meets classic style...SO IN LOVE is a haunting tune played in a truly haunting style. - - I won't review that album (which has a few cracks and pops actually), only to say, its a cute side dish, but I'll stick with Buddy on organ, because the Hammond is my love and passion... also, although Buddy was a great pianist, I think his organ chops were even better !

Great Hammond Organ Jazz/ Cole Porter at his Best
"Have Organ Will Swing" was one of the late Buddy Cole's best Hammond Organ albums. Buddy Cole (who played the organ parts for Henry Mancini's first Mr. Lucky tracks) was to me one of the best all around organist/artists of all time. "Cole Plays Cole" is still the best instrumental album of Cole Porter's music that I have ever heard. The piano playing is absolutely brilliant. If you still like "good" music, I highly reccomend this CD.

Mancini's organist for Mr. Lucky
Buddy Cole played the ultra-cool jazz organ stylings on the Mr. Lucky soundtrack, composed by Henry Mancini.

Odd
Notice the picture they use for Have Organ, Will Swing? The cut the poor girls legs off. She's swinging with a pair of stumps!
