Enlightening and enlivening...

I've noticed a number of difficulties with some books about tarot and related subjects, and from writers I've learned to respect, even honor. Nevertheless and despite my cavill, this book is really, really wonderful - I just wish that copyeditors did better jobs these days.If you can buy only one book on Kabbala, this might be the one. Pollack is very accepting of the ideas of others and I was tickled to see her mention Alan Moore's Promethea. I was particularly fond of his idea for Da'ath (you'll have to read the book now <G>).Settling in nicely, I was, however, a little jolted by her reference to the apple connected with the tree of knowledge. There is no mention of an apple. The apple connection came into being - perhaps - via the Celts who called the Western Paradise, Avalon - Apple Land. There are numerous legends and mythologies dealing with apples, but let me get to the bottom line: The apple, when halved is a yoni symbol. And for someone such as Rachel Pollack with most impressive credentials, to have made this (common) error has some picky person, such as I(who doesn't know 1/1000th of what this adept knows)is distressing. The question is, what other errors are there that I couldn't possibly recognize?I did recognize, however, that she and DuQuette believe in nine months for a human pregnancy and Pollack even calls it nine LUNAR months. The Gregorian calendar showed up in the late 16th Century, CE. It would seem to me that in the Old Days, the length of pregancies were gauged by the moon; a human pregnancy is 10 lunar months, or 40 weeks - a significant number, as well.As for Haindl's artful and truly grand Tree of Life, sadly, even after I ironed the determined creases, the gloss on it prevents me (maybe it's just I) from truly enjoying the marvels I know are there for me to ponder.Buy it anyway.

Journey into the Unknowable.

I originally had checked out this book from a somewhat nearby library, but it was missing its back poster. So, I was joyous when this book arrrived all in tact, including the poster. The Kabbalah diagram is described in this book as a kind of tree of life. Rachel Pollack was quite successful in integrating the two symbolic systems and to help us appreciate both of them better. And without a tiresome dogma, which books of this type may lapse into. Pollack is careful describe each of the 22 sephiroth and to give history of how people in the past have used them. Hermann Haindl's painting is complex, but fetching, and worthy of study, as you try to trace its imagery to the text of the book. There are ten pulses or emanations of divine energy and 22 connections between them. Hence kind of tarot (major arcana) association, beyond the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. So the essence of God is unknowable, and one must travel back and forthJourney to the through this tree to get to a better understanding of the divine.

Good intro to Kabbalah

By no means, authoritative, this book is a good introduction to the Tree of Life in Kabballah. It presents the concepts behind the sephiroth and pathways in an easy to understand manner. The e-book does not have a copy of the painting described, nor is the image available anywhere on the internet that I can find, making the commentary on it somewhat useless and the descriptions feel disjointed as a result. I ended up skimming over those parts by the end. A great starting point for further study.

Balanced, Insightful and Instructive

This is my first deep dive into the kabbalah and fortunately chose this title and this author to break the ice. I started the journey completely in the dark and came out the other side enlightened and hungry for more!

An important book.

Important book for those interested and wanting to learn about basic concepts of the Kabbalah along with some higher concepts that are unique to the system as well as analogous concepts from other cultures. It's out of print, but I wanted to get it because Pollack's insights and wide ranging knowledge across what is often called the occult is unsurpassed today.

Tree of life explained

Worth a read if you are deeply interested in Tarot cards and wish to inhance your knowledge of the tree of life. Rachelle Pollock does an excellent job explaining the difference between the western, Christian and Jewish interpretations of the tree of life. She goes on to give into detail about the three worlds and the Ten Sephiroth.
