I don't have the lights to verify but I think they were about 3 inches in height

I think so. We are just using night light bulbs from Walmart.

Q: What size hole is recommended for mounting?

I didn’t mount; I used hole in base of an item and simply inserted the bulb into it. It’s obviously a long lasting bulb as it is still going.
