Good, but not as good as the first two movies
Rings is a very loose sequel to, but mostly a reboot of The Ring and The Ring 2, which starred Naomi Watts. This one again involves the video of Samara that causes people who watch it to die in seven days. Of course, this movie is set in the present day, so the video has evolved beyond the VHS copy and is now digital, which presents its own set of complications. The crux of the story is that the hero, Julia, played by Matilda Lutz, ends up watching her boyfriends' copy of the video (the only way to keep him from dying in 12 hours) and discovers that the way to break the curse is to find and cremate, Samara's physical remains. The movie is a decent b-level horror movie that looks like a big-budget movie. I think that one thing the movie really missed was the lack of star power in the lead roles. Even though Johnny Galecki (from The Big Bang Theory) and Vincent D'Onofrio have roles in the movie, they are not leads, and while Naomi Watts is not a megastar, she was more well-known when she helmed the franchise than Lutz is. Secondly, I do not think that the movie was nearly as suspenseful or scary as the original movies. I think that has a lot to do with knowing how the movie was going to progress and just trying to figure out how they were going to pay it off. That said, the movie does have its share of jump-scare moments, and the ending was not the typical horror movie ending. It does have the benefit of being a more psychological horror movie as opposed to a gory one. So, if you do not like movies with a lot of blood, this may appeal to you.For those who get the blu-ray, the A/V quality is great. Even though the movie was shot with a digital camera it very much has the look of a movie shot on film. For extras, there are about 20 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, a 12-minute featurette on the film series starting with the original movie and how this one ties into that movie, a feature on bringing back the character of Samara, and a collection of the "scary" moments from the movie. Not a ton of material, but it is there if you like it.The movie is okay but not much more than that. The plot is similar to those of the first two movies but updated for the digital era. Unfortunately, that is not enough to bring the quality of this movie up to that of the original films. It is ultimately a movie that did not have to be made, but if you are in the mood for a suspense/horror movie, it can be used to take up an hour and a half.

Entertaining
I really enjoyed the original Rings movie so I thought we'd give this one a try. It seems to me it is like a prequel to the original and isn't too bad. It is fun entertainment. My younger son really enjoys this movie but he likes just about any horror movie. I found this movie to be just as creepy as the original.

Here's why I'm giving it 4 stars:
It's still not the same without Daveigh Chase (the one who played Samara in the first film). Of course the video tape had her in all 3 of them. She just wasn't physically there in the last two. The third one disappointed me for a few reasons:1.) Daveigh Chase wasn't in the "The Ring 2" and "Rings".2.) I kinda miss Naomi Watts in this one... They should've bribed her to come back lol.3.) It wasn't AS scary. On a positive note, it this one DID get into more details about Samara's life. That was cool. And I really enjoy the psychology of everything :)

I liked it. Is it a worthy successor of the first two? I think so. While they are connected they also were not so that was nice.Possible spoilers:Sometimes some ideas get a little worn such as the dirty priest or bringing evil into the world but for this it was oddly fitting and contributed to the first two making more sense. I really liked the music score at the end and how it ended. Hopefully they let the franchise die after this. I think it would be hard to make a really good sequel to it.

A new energy to the story of Samara.
While parts of the movie made you question how the first movie had to do with this rendition of the story of Samara, it brought it full circle once the movie started to unfold. For a deeper rendition of the trilogy, get the three part DVD in Japanese that has both English and Japanese languages and subtitles. Slight differences in the English versions and the Original Japanese Versions, but both were well done.

If that person you know says they really liked it, you get to introduce them to a lot of great horror!
Did you like the first OUIJI film? That's my comparison. This is a 'reboot' with some ideas, but is not for fans of the original, the U.S. remake, or perhaps not even for seasoned horror fans. Instead, it's a decent introductory horror film for teens. It is because of that, that I don't want to fault this movie too much. It wasn't made for me.If you venture and are a horror fan, you'll be clued in right away was the film opens with a big budget airplane scene where the curse strikes a man because it's been 7 days. It's such a big scene that it misses the nuances of what has worked in horror films. But the film stays big, and Samara continues to pop up more like Jason from the later Friday films, becoming more of a larger than life cartoon. So if you do happen upon someone that liked this movie a lot, you should not ridicule them, instead, rejoice, because you have found someone to begin to share all your favorite horror films with.
