It's about time, yes? Peter Cetera's Warner Brothers solo hits have never been collected together in one package until now, some quarter century after his chart-run heyday. So, despite opting out of Chicago's (his former band) long overdue 2016 Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, looks like 2017's the year to take advantage of the accompanying commercial hoopla. Predictably ballad-heavy, this 14-track compilation still opens with One the Line, a song from Cetera's first (and most rocking) solo album, 1981's Peter Cetera, recorded during one of Chicago's deepest commercial lulls. From there it's movie ballads (Glory of Love, After All), duets (with Amy Grant, Cher, Chaka Khan), the radio hits (One Good Woman, Restless Heart), and a handful of lesser-known singles (Big Mistake, Best of Times). All of them well-written, beautifully sung, and impeccably produced. If only he'd gotten in touch with his inner rocker a bit more often.
