Nice and very handy umbrella.

I sit at my kids sporting events several times a week so I'm always in the sun. I love this umbrella. It is very light weight, assembles and disassembles easily, provides 100% shade from the sun and protection in the rain (light rain -- not a downpour!). You can tilt it, which is nice when the sun is starting to set. You can also easily adjust the height of the umbrella as well. It comes with stakes but I would recommend purchasing some weights. The stakes don't work if you're sitting on pavement at a ball field and they really don't do much unless there is zero wind. The umbrella works well even when it's windy and it's quite sturdy. You will need to put your feet over the base and hold onto the pole on windy days. That may bother some people but it's a small sacrifice for me because it's so easy to assemble and carry that I'm willing to compromise. I use the base as a foot rest so it works for me but I'm sure weights would definitely help as well.

We live in hot, dry Los Angeles and need shade during our daughter's soccer games. We have gone through three other brands of umbrellas, all of which were either a pain to carry or to put up, or not terribly useful, so we did not use them them more than once. We saw a couple of other parents use the Joe Shade, and ordered it the next day. Portable, sturdy and useful -- especially because of the hinge which makes it easy to point at the sun. Also, you don't have to pound it or screw it into the ground. The stand is great and even comes with spikes for windy days. It is perfect for us at the soccer field! Easy to put up, take down, carry and provides shade no matter where the sun is in the sky. I had a small issue with a part, and contacted the company, sending an email on a Sunday night. I heard back within 30 minutes from Dave who solved the problem instantly (on a Sunday night!). So, great product and exceptional customer service. Thank you Dave!

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: The five stars remain … wish I could give more. The original unit sent to me was definitely defective. The replacement unit, sent to me by the owner of the company, is much better than the original unit. The replacement unit’s components are assembled tighter than the original unit. No parts loser than they need to be. The parts with movement do so smoothly. Nothing gets stuck. This shade is very easy to put together. The base legs practically place themselves. One need only tighten the knob. The umbrella component opens easily and is huge, providing ample shade. It took me just under one minute to put this shade together to how I wanted it. The shade material is sturdy and very effective. The sun, no matter how bright, does not get through. Storing the shade is easy. It takes up very little room in the trunk of my car, and it is ready for use whenever I need it. Parks without shade trees are no longer a problem for me. This shade is perfect. UPDATE: The owner called me back and agreed I received a defective unit. He is going to send a replacement one. I will leave this review at 1 star until the owner of Joe Shade calls me back and tells me how to fix the umbrella. It is made in China, which means the parts and assembly are inferior. The knob labeled "leg lock" doesn't really lock the legs. It doesn't tighten. It simply spins and spins and spins, rendering the legs unstable. The "twist lock" is supposed to hold the height of the umbrella into place. This "twist lock" is too tight and I need to get a Teamster to untwist it. Regardless, the "twist lock" does not lock the pole is place. To collapse the umbrella, one must bring a tool kit. There is a small, metal plate which, when pressed, collapses the umbrella. Thing is, there is a cheap, red plastic button which is supposed to press that metal plate, and this cheap plastic part doesn't line up with the plate it is supposed to press. One must slide a long screw driver into the assembly and press the metal plate. There is a small, white, plastic part labeled "quick release". This is where the two parts of the umbrella lock together. This is the only thing which works.

This is probably my 5th purchase of this umbrella. We love it. It's easy to use, it protects so well against the sun. The quality is superb. Each one I've had has lasted a long time. When it starts wearing out, I order another one. Love the green color too
