A rock hounds must have.
Amazing book, lots of great information. Does leave out some notable information that I’m still struggling to find. Jade is barely a foot note. Id is pretty solid but also leave a little to be desired. That being said from what I’ve seen that’s out there this is very comprehensive and a worthy purchase.

The BEST book ever for identifying your rock finds. Easy to use.
This book was required in a Rock and Mineral ID Class. It is absolutely worth the cost. I am often asked which one should I choose? I always tell rockhounds this one because it helps you learn about rocks without running around asking other people.

Mostly great.
Really good information, just not as helpful as I'd hoped in identifying gems, rocks and minerals.

Takes me back to my student days.
I went to University to stretch my mind after three years of work in Woburn Safari Park (Where I met my Muse. She was so beautiful.) When she left, my mind saw and still sees her as I first saw her, ah, those heady days.) At the end of 1989 she and a lot of her friends left to go I not know where, but even after 26 years I still hang onto my first look at her. I became the Head Ranger of the Bear and Macaque Reserve and all its little charged it but got a sloppy mind, despite being careful with the animals.Towards the end of my time at Woburn Safari Park, I was reading the local newspaper there in Middle Bedfordshire when I noticed that the local College/University (University of Bedford in Luton) was holding an open day of sorts. I telephoned up and within an hour I was signed up for Mapping Science/Geology Hons Degree.I was given permission to finish my time at Woburn Safari Park and said my fond fairwells to the characters I had been along side there. And then then three years of mind-bending began (I have never been the mathematical sort but within a week I had trained myself the required level trig. I can't recall how I engaged with 3D trig!)At the beginning of my course I required a small but powerful magnifying glass, lined notebooks, a special weighted hammer and belt hanger for it and a Earth Sciences Identification book. I graduated in 1993. I always knew I would never find an occupation with my hons Degree in Geology with Geographical Science (which I switched to after Part One of the degree.)Indoors and outdoor, I would never have graduated as I did, especially as I didn't take it too seriously, without what appears to be an outstanding copy of the fieldbook "Handbook of Rocks, Minerals and Gemstones (Walter Schumann). This book, as I recall, my copy all those years ago (I think) Is a vast improvement on my own earlier copy I owned as a student. It is almost bursting with information and crammed to each page with pin-sharp pictures of rocks, etc., and more info on the subjects of each or so.You, if you are an Undergraduate or Professor or just someone who is just interested in beauty and intellect or someone who wants to take up the profession at whatever the level this is, the first article to purchase and make the degree that much easier, indoors or outdoors, is this Masterpiece.
