"8 in 1 Out" means that this is a selector more than a splitter. You can select only 1 output from 8 different inputs, but not at the same time.

The selector that I purchased has 4 inputs and 1 output so I could hook up 4 different devices for one amplifier.

Your solution is to purchase two (2) of these units. Connect one of them (as an input splitter) to all your output devices (cd player, turntable, cassette deck, R2R tape deck, phone, PC, Tuner, etc.) using each input of the 8-1. Then split the output of this 8-1 to go to both your amp and the pair of RCA connectors marked "output" (turning this into a 1 to 8 splitter instead of an 8 to1) of the other unit. Connect each device requiring an input (cassette deck, R2R tape deck, digital recorder, etc.) to the RCA connectors marked as "inputs" (now really outputs) of the second unit. Now you can select wich of the output devices you want to connect to each of the input devices by just selecting it on each box (one for input devices and the other for output devices). This works because it doesn't matter which way the signal passes through these units. An 8 to 1 passive splitter like this can also be used as a 1 to 8 splitter. You can actually use a 1 to 4, or a 1 to 2 output splitter if you have fewer than 8 recording devices. Hope this helps.
