Novice here. I'm struggling with huge depth of field, i.e. Even on the smallest subject I'm only getting a very small portion in focus

Actually, what you're experiencing is a very shallow depth of field and not a huge one. I'm afraid it's one of the pitfalls of macro photography. The closer you get to an object, the shallower the depth of field will be. What you are experiencing is not a fault with the lens. Using a very small aperture (f16 or smaller) will help a bit, but an advanced technique called focus stacking is the only real way to get front to back focussing. The other method you could try is to take the photo from slightly further away and then crop the image afterwards.

Does this lens work with auto focus on entry level dslr like d3100 that don't have the option of AF motor in the cam body?What would be af-s on nikon

Is it a fixed lens or can it zoom. sorry it might sound a stupid question but I am new to photography

The focal length of the lens is fixed at 105mm i.e. it is not a zoom lens in which you can alter the focal length e.g say 55mm to 155mm. Zoom's give flexibility as, using the zoom, you can alter the focal length and get the picture to fit the frame as you wish. With a fixed focal length lens you have to (potentially) move to get the picture right as you want it in the frame.The Sigma 105mm is a great fix focal length lens. It provides a macro ability as well so you can get close to a smaller subject. These days the zoom lenses are very good and if you are new to photography, it may give you greater scope of 'freedom' to have a zoom. I can thoroughly recommend the Sigma 105mm but suggest you look at the option of a zoom (something like an 18 - 250mm would give a large scope or a 70-300mm . Once you have some experience using a zoom, you can then decide which focal length 'prime' lens would best/good for your photography style

I usually have dx lense on my 5300 nikon . will this lense be ok as it is for full-frame?

I have this lens on our D5300 and everything works fine. Full frame is bigger than DX so the lenses so there is no cropping or vingretting that I have noticed. Focus works fine but if you have it on full range it can take a while if it hunts for it.
