Titanic (ITV) [DVD]

Judge it yourself at this price!
There are some “Titanic” freaks who like books, mostly docu-dramas and the very good "A Night to Remember" is their Bible. And there are some "Downton Abbey" freaks who like classy period soap-operas with good strong characters in conflict... Anyone knows the Big Tragedy here:2224 on Titanic and 1517 fatalities, mostly men and 2nd or 3rd class passengers and crew-a real class struggle,by the law lost for the poorest don’t you think? We know that but all those characters, fictional or not,we observe don't and that leaves a lot for imagination. AND interpretations! Now these one star reviews brought down the price and there is no need to argue about, you can take this for the price of a coffee! Only if you are interested for this big tragedy and have an open mind... Four stars plus one more to balance all those misjudgements, you can't hate that much something that has no value!

Flawless
Perhaps all that Yorkshire grit in Downton Abbey has got to everyone else. This is a powerful, sensitive and inspirational production, enhanced by the music, and acting of the highest calibre - notably Toby Jones'.It's up there with Brideshead as testimony to ITV's ability to pull out all the stops when occasion demands.

Titanic, better than you might think.
I have to admit that when I saw this on ITV when it came out in 2012 I felt like most of the other 1 star reviewers. However now that I have watched it all in one evening I have found it to be a very good drama. The snap shot of life in Edwardian Britain and the differance in classes is very well delivered, as you'd expect from Julian Fellows. Each episode takes a look at the lives onboard Titanic from a differant point of view, so yes the ship sinks 4 times, although not completely until part 4. This in my view is actually a very good way to build to the final scenes in part four. With every part you learne a little bit more of the poeple and their lives, what brought them to be on Titanic and in some cases their final moments. I also love the way in which the tension builds in the final moments of Titanic and the fact that it is shot in a way that makes you feel you are there with them.Of course there are the odd historical inaccuracies but then what Titanic Drama / movie hasn't, with the exception of 'A Night to Remember.' The sets look very good although the smoking room looks nothing like the Titanic's and there are other sets that look nothing like the ships. But that aside there are some great set inclussions as well, like the blinds in the wheel house. Titanic did have these and I have checked this by reading the British Inquiry. In his evidence Robert Hitchins clearly tells the court that he 'could NOT SEE the Bridge because the blinds were down. Always at sunset the blinds are put down.' Well done to the producers for this as it's the first time I've seen this in any drama or movie. Even the 1997 block buster movie didn't show this. All in all I liked this the second time around but I also understand that it is not to everybodies taste. Some like a story to go from start to finish and others like it this way, told over serveral parts slowly unfolding the story as you watch. If you do buy this then lookout for the 2 documentories in the extras, both very good and they add to the value.

If you love Titanic...
Not a simple rehash of the Titanic story but more of a new story about each of the ships occupants. Seeing their lives entwine with one another and the obvious outcome will likely make you shed a tear or two. Well acted with a few familiar faces (Doctor Who, Downtown Abbey) - worth any fan's few bob!

Great DVD
Arrived a day earlier than expected.Packaging intact.Great take on the Titanic story, very personal and human.Jenna Coleman's role in particular stood out, especially when she is reunited with her potential fiancee in the lifeboat near the end.Nice backstory about the set too.Would recommend!

Time and tide wait for no man!
The breaking up of the story into 4 episodes is the problem with "Titanic" NOT the acting NOR the storyline. You have to watch the first two episodes as one in order to understand the concept of Julian Fellowes script. Otherwise it's all so mixed up it would give even Einstein trouble!!!!!This 100th anniversary production is fine and I think portrays a good sense of reality to the sinking because the characters are from all social classes and backgrounds. The divides between the classes were massive at this time which only made the whole situation of the sinking so much worse. Suddenly education, background, training, position were no longer relevant and people, regardless of class, didn't know how to manage when all were suddenly equal and trying to leave the ship.If you watch episodes 1 and 2 together and then 3 and 4 the story flows well and is easily understood. Don't watch episode 1 as a stand alone because it's far too complicated without the "extras" in the episode 2 scenes. Shame on ITV for splitting the story into 4 single episodes and not 1 long episode and two shorter ones.Focusing on just a few main characters from each class was very good, I felt drawn into their lives and part of their story. I didn't like the portrayal of the Captain as it made him into a very stupid man and I don't think he was stupid. Misguided maybe but not stupid and very brave to go down with his ship. Also the sometimes very positive roles of the officers and crew were a little OTT especially the second class maid, really overdone! The extras on the second disk are interesting and a nice tribute for the anniversary.4 stars because this could have been better given TIME and attention to the details, they should have sweated the small stuff.Don't be put off by all the neagtive comments here on Amazon. It really wasn't that bad and it is a decent production and storyline. I found people publishing comments on Amazon before all four episodes had even aired on TV was ridiculous and very unfair.

Sehr sehenwert.
