For dogs with kidney trouble you need this mega expensive dog food...
Thankfully my dog eats this, it's specifically for pets with kidney problems and there really isn't alot of choice of foods in these circumstances. It's smelly, claggy, sticks to the bowl and is difficult for my dog to eat, but wolf (scuse the pun) it down she does. What I would say is it's FAR TOO EXPENSIVE for what it is. It costs me £75 for 10 days of food. Alternatives will have to be found cos it's costing more to feed the dog than the rest of the family.

Helped my pooch get her appetite back
My dog had gone off her renal dry food as she's on medication that made her tummy unwell. Used this to encourage her to eat and it worked well. She found it really tasty.

Highly recommended.
I am extremely pleased with this product, I have a dog with renal failure who has always been a poor eater and was seriously under weight, she scoffs this down, has gained weight and is thriving. I could not be happier.

Dog thinks it's tasty but I am far from convinced at this price - supplier used for multiple order excellent with fast delivery
Product - Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Renal food..hm, I have been doing some fairly extensive research about this industry, since our beloved springer was diagnosed with renal insufficiency. What I have discovered (which of course is still just my own non expert opinion) is as follows:So, first off- there is no doubt that WHATEVER is in this food-my dog loves it and maybe yours will too. And if you have a sick dog with a poor appetite this might be just the thing. And frankly in that case, you'll be as thrilled as we were when it goes down so well.BUT! Just because a dog loves to eat something, doesn't mean it's any good for him. The problem is the mark-up. It is pretty obscene in my opinion and one starts to wonder, WHY??? Especially when you dig around a bit and find out that really, like much in the world-there are really only a few big players out there. All the big brands - in truth there are only about 5 - all own each other, They dress up the bazzillion dog food brands, according to we chumps, sorry-customers, willing to do anything for our beloved four-leggeds. The marketing behind what most owners feed, is EXTENSIVE and certainly not for the dogs benefit! It is for ours. "9 out of 10 owners feed their dogs - x" (what they don't say is "because we spend 1 billion a year on marketing! Gullible fools!") So if our vet says, 'your dog needs this £3 a tin food' we swallow it, because they are the experts right? Well they are, that is true. If you know anything about what a vet has to go through (in the UK at least) to become one, they command immediate respect, just like doctors. HOWEVER-just like the medical profession, there is this massive (deeply disturbing) collusion between vets and the dog food industry, just as there is with medics and big pharma. I mean the latter is HUGE in the US but is also a factor here in the UK.Essentially when you break down the contents of this food, and if you're in the priveleged position as I am, to know someone who worked for years in the dog food industry, you start to question things. In the final analysis, I am not convinced that the quality and ratio of protein, fats etc, in this expensive tin of dog food is any better than (ideally - organic, free range) chicken from the supermarket - which I am sure would still be cheaper and more nutrtionally dense than this mushy-God-only-knows-what, with "specially formulated" additives. Kidney compromised dogs STILL need some protein and in my view it should be super high quality, just much less of it. We were already feeding our sweet dog raw chicken (which he adored and was thriving on), supplemented with cod liver oil (took 10 years off him-in months, no s*** but now absolutely the worst thing we could give him with kidney disease) and glucosamine. We intuited before his diagnosis (and we've caught his SUPER early) that we should switch him to less chicken and more rice..and lo and behold my knowlegeable friend and neighbour recommended we ditch this exorbitant chum, for pretty much the same thing! So, first we are waiting on more tests from his (amazing) vet, before making our final decision. And I would advise you to follow a similar process, if you can-do your own research before swallowing wholesale, what you are told. I anticipate a return to whole foods, a little free range (organic if we can afford it) chicken, vegetables and salmon oil (instead of cod liver which is contraindicated for kidney disease dogs) and possibly we'll stick with the glucosamine..but our's is a more complicated case so that might have to go as well.Don't get me wrong. We do need the experts, but we also need to use our own brains, not be afraid to ask (awkward) questions, and follow our intuition. After all, ultimately, you probably know your dog better than anyone else. Good luck, hope this long review helped.

Royal Canin renal diet was recommended by my vet
It is very important to have the correct food when your dog is unwell. Royal Canin renal diet was recommended by my vet.I find it very convenient to order on line, as it is delivered direct to my door. I also like the small pouches it comes in as I have a small dog,and it means less wastage. Me and my dog are very happy with the service.
