Seiko, the home of the oldest and prestigious Japanese watches, is now focused on innovation and sophistication. The Seiko watch is designed as a small jewel personal and intimate. The watches are those harmonious with the environment and the wearer, and their functions offer a reassuring and exciting feeling. Review: Simply the best you can get for this money - You can't really get an automatic cheaper then this without compromising the quality. The size might be a bit small for certain men but the black dial with the red parts gives it a nice look. Also the illumination on the dial and hands is fantastic. It is big enough to easily read the time. It keeps time really nicely. You just have to keep in mind that you are wearing a mechanical timepiece which can be affected by a lot of things. Shacking, rocking, gravity, magnetism, heat, etc... It will loose time eventually and you have to reset it, but this is part of the fun. I've read that some people think that the day indicator is not English and then they send the watch back. Well the thing is these are bilingual, but the one of the languages is always English. So don't freak out when you see Spanish or something else. If you set it to an English day indication the mechanics will jump over the other one. The only negative might be the strap. It is a really cheap one. They had to cut down costs somewhere, so the strap got the beating. But this doesn't diminish the value of the actual timepiece. You can buy a nicer strap, if you need one. There you have it. There is no lower when it comes to getting a good automatic watch. It is a huge bargain for this price and it might not be "swiss made", but Seiko is a well known, acknowledged brand from top to bottom in the industry. Be it a Grand Seiko or just a regular quartz, their in-house made movements are one of the best. The "Seiko 5" line can compete with all the other well known low end popular brands. Not to mention that the others will give you a quartz for the same price, if not for more. If you never had an automatic, this is the best entry watch you can get. You will appreciate this little, simple timepiece for any occasion. Go and treat yourself with one of these, or with the other subtypes. A whole new world will unfold and you will be sucked in to the world of miniature mechanical wonders. Review: "Quality Marlene, quality." - I am a destroyer of watches.... And... my once wonderful Citizen Eco Drive, that I never once used to work on a car, or do DIY in, wore to work or did anything robust in (outside the bedroom) and kept for social occasions and going out in garments, ironed, has a couple of nasty scratches on its face. A new watch needed to be purchased and used for very formal things like weddings, funerals, job interviews etc. The Eco Drive will go on holidays, dates and down the pub, maybe a few of the more cerebral gigs too. Meanwhile, this Seiko is going to be reserved for `best'. In my current life it's not going to get much use, so... a battery watch is out of the question... a solar watch might exceed the 7-11 months time these can be kept in dark places before they need days of charging in direct sunlight.... Whereas... this lovely thing will run for 48 hours on 3-4 minutes of gentle rocking. This is ideal and means it can be safely put away and dragged out when the suited and booted do requires. It is also easy to set up - one detent on the crown sets the date and clicks through days quickly, reversing changes the day of week. The second detent is for time setting - easy peasy. This is a quality Seiko watch - it's fairly restrained in design too - classic - with deep lustrous stainless steel and a clear and simple face and medium sized - thin enough to slip under a cuff-linked sleeve. It is a paragon of good build quality and it shows. This particular model has had some rave reviews on watch geek forums for its quality and time keeping and that and the whopping 81% discount were key factors in finalizing my choice of this watch. It oozes restrained class and quality. My only niggle is strap adjustment - of all the bracelet watches I own / have owned this was the most difficult to adjust (take links out of). Once done though (and there's plenty of adjustment - the links aren't hugely wide and there are 3 pin adjustment positions one side of the clasp) it's easy to appreciate the quality of that too - it really is good. I am very happy with this - now all I need is an invite to a `black tie' / formal attire do. Update. One thing this watch really lacks is a hand wind capability. I have a cheap Chinese 'Goer' and magnificent Vostok Amfibian - both are automatics and both have this facility. It is really useful, if you take your watch off at night, to be able to give it a quick wind in the morning. With this you either have to buy an automatic watch winder or stand waggling the watch to add power. It's a shame as the movement used is one of Seiko's best and included in far more expensive watches and (if you keep it on and thus wound) keeps good time for a mechanical watch. If I were wearing this every day, this wouldn't be a problem, but I wanted to keep this tidy (unscratched) as a plain but elegant watch. If you're buying this as your all day every day wearer, this shouldn't be a problem.

Great watch
A great looking watch. Do note that this is an older Seiko model so it does not have hacking (i.e. when you pull the crown out to set the time the second hand does not stop) nor hand winding. Quite a small watch so if you have big wrists and like a larger watch this maybe isn't for you. Like all lower end Seiko watches, the bracelet it terrible. Replace it with an alternative or a leather strap (a black leather rally strap with red stitching goes brilliantly with this).

Great Automatic Watch - just take note of size info in my review...
Lovely little watch for the price. Does what it says on the tin. Metal strap is a little flimsy/light - but I always planned to change the strap anyway. NOTE - THE BAND/LUG WIDTH IS 18MM NOT 20MM AS STATED IN THE DESCRIPTION. Also with noting the watch body is pretty small - so if you have big wrists it's not for you. This was exactly what I was looking for. I'm more than happy with this purchase. This replaced a similar Seiko 5 watch I lost recently 🙁. If you are in the market for a reputable brand reliable budget automatic watch you can't go wrong with this one.

Needs winding
I like the size, weith, and face. However, being self-winding, it seems that it has to be worn continually. It is rarely still going in the morning. Diasspointing

Top quality at this pricepoint
The usually high Seiko quality. This has a small watch face but still looks fantastic, may not suit a very large person or wrist. Lug width is 18mm Changed bracelet to a black with red stitching - am in love!

I own a book called "Celebrity Watches." It is essentially glorified advertising, but it is replete with great photographs of watches and some of the people who made them famous. The usual suspects are there--Rolex, IWC, etc.... Each chapter gives you a brief history of the watchmakers, how their watches are made, how they have evolved. It's a good coffee-table book. I don't know when it was exactly that I realized that I liked my Seiko 5 "Speed Racer" more than any of those in the photographs, but I did. (Yeah, yeah--my budget maybe helped, but still...) So many timepieces these days are all about the bling, and even the high-end brands make vulgar clunkers. Instead, the Seiko 5 has, thank God, eschewed this pompous aesthetic: its dial clocks in at 39 mm. Not too big, not too small. Similarly, the watch has weight, but it is very comfortable. I know some guys prefer leather bands, but I prefer the metal bracelets, and this one is really nice: again, comfortable, easy to adjust. It manages to call just enough attention to be noticed, but not enough to be flashy. The deployment clasp is solid and, unlike some, easily snaps on or off without ever irritating the skin on your wrist. There is a subtle elegance to this watch that is really only noticeable in the details. For example, I see that Hamilton makes a similar looking watch: black dial, close in size, steel bracelet... but the crown of the Hamilton is at the 3 o'clock position. The Seiko's crown is low and tucked in at 4 o'clock. This makes it extremely comfortable for people like me who wear a watch on their left hand; the crown never digs into the back of your hand. Some watches are hard to read in sunlight because of the glare, but the markings on this watch stand out from the black dial, and the hands are readily visible. I especially like the sweeping red second hand. I wash dishes with the watch on, and so it has gotten wet, and I have never had any problems with it. It should actually be waterproof, but I don't swim much, and I probably would not take a metal watch into a pool anyway. From the pictures you can see that the underside of the watch allows you to see the actual mechanism, which is a great feature. Before this watch, I had always owned quartz/battery driven watches. I wasn't sure if I would like having a mechanical watch. Yeah, no need to replace batteries is nice, but I was worried about sacrificing precision. Having read other reviews, I took a chance. My experience has been similar to that of others: this watch is within 3-4 seconds per day. Moreover, sometimes it gains those few seconds, sometimes it loses them. So, in the end, I never have to adjust the time. In fact, I haven't reset the watch since I received it. So all of this got me to thinking about the book, the famous luxury brands, etc., and I am convinced that the only reason the Seiko 5 is not to be found in the book is its price. Seiko makes an excellent, dependable and aesthetically superior product, and it is spurned only because it is within the reach of most people. Sadly, this is the only reason I can think of for not including this watch in the book, or for buying it. This watch is sharp, sporty and reliable. I love it, and if you like what you see in the pictures, then purchase it. It is even better in hand.

If I go back 12 years, I was looking for such a watch, as above. Seiko are well known for good reliable watches, so I bought one. It’s been on my wrist for over 12 years, but the other day it decided to stop. Well I thought, you’ve given me12 years of excellent service, thank you. No need to reinvent the wheel, so I found this watch, very similar to my previous one, thought it was even smarter, so bought it. I’m not too pleased with metal straps, so as with my previous one, I bought a different strap, smart, easy to wash, and comfortable. I can only speak well of these watches, excellent !

Good-looking, comfortable to wear, accurate. Can't go wrong with this watch if you're looking for a Seiko 5. Highly recommended.
