Good book, poor packaging.
The book itself is good. I study a photography course and this is helping to make sense of some of the language used. Unfortunately it was very poorly packaged, leaving it bent and damaged on arrival. :(

Only buy it if you need it for a degree course
uninteresting academic and not for reading unless you are on a degree course and need to quote from it in your learning.Try using your uni library or get one second hand ....you will never read it

A clearing amongst thickets of abstruse concepts.
Unlike much writing on photography, this is a model of clarity. Recommended to those who want a thorough grounding in contemporary and historical thought without wading through semi-penetrable essays, although it encourages further reading. The new chapters are particularly welcome.

Yes this is more of an academic study thus some readers will find it hard going and some passages need to be read more than once. The subject matter is interesting with many theories explained. However I have read many books and essays on photography for university study and feel that the style of writing is terrible, a study crammed full of pointless lists e.g. "people pictured wearing clothes, jeans, dresses, shorts, dress shirts, jackets, socks, hats, sweaters etc," I know what clothes are! And also every other line seems to contain a few words in brackets making smooth flow of reading near impossible. Without the breaks in the flow the whole piece would be a third shorter (by a third I mean around 30 percent, that is just an estimation on my part) and a lot easier to fathom (or understand, whichever you, the reader, prefer). Those points aside overall not a terrible read but there are other choices out there (in shops or online, in libraries, on a friends bookcase, left on the bus etc.).

A must have for serious photographers
Much more of a concise book on the critical theory behind photography. An easier read than some others andgreat for quick reference to research specific subjects.
