Beautiful, emotional, rhythmic piano trio
~ Another powerful release from Abdullah Ibrahim. Originally recorded for the Enja label in 1976, this outstanding session has been remastered in 2008. The sound is spectacular on both releases.~ Ibrahim receives outstanding sympathetic support from bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Roy Brooks as he sings and plays soprano on both takes of the beautiful "Ishmael". Other than these two tracks, Ibrahim focuses on his highly rhythmic melodic piano playing. As with almost all of his recordings, Ibrahim's South African roots clearly and strongly influence his playing and his compositions. All of the tunes on this CD are Ibrahim originals and have a strong African folkish flavour as he pays tribute to his South African heritage and Islam religion. The music is hauntingly beautiful throughout and always easily accessible although occasionally intense.~ Highly recommended for anyone seeking a 60-minute piano trio recording that goes beyond the normal standards.
