Super slim, easy to use, not as noisy as people complained about
Adding a photo to reference, but this is the exact form factor as my 16tb seagate external drive, but less than half the hight. On top of that is my OWC 4 bay enclosure, so it's half the length, 3x the height, and about 2x the weight. I loved my OWC for the last 2 yrs, but it;'s bulky as hell, so I went with this StarTech one. The fan is decently loud, but not so bad that your life come crashing down like some reviews make it sound. The StarTech one is even quieter than that. I have it running during zoom calls all day, and never a problem. Maybe if you have a super sensitive mic while recording content it could be a problem... but then just put it under the desk or something.Easy to use. Stays cool. Gives as much performance as the best enclosures.I wish the TB ports were labeled so that you knew which was which... I remember some reviews saying there was a difference in function, but I've not had issue.Pros:- Form Factor. Love how I can just slide it into my laptop bag and go... well, minus the power supply.- Speed. Definitely matched my OWC enclosure, and thats supposed to be the best one out there.- Heat Dissipation. Have not experienced ANY throttling, even after hours of heavy use. You can feel some warmth after that long, but totally expected with that kind of abuse.- Noise. Many complaints about noise, but I just don't see it as that bad at all.Cons:- The daisy chain ports are powered separately, so if you have another drive connected, and eject this one, hear it spin down, and think you can just pull the plug... nope. Remember to eject those first, then pull.- Weight. While MUCH lighter than the alternatives, and it IS VERY sturdy, I wish it were half the weight. But I'm a constant traveler.

Defective junk
Usually Startech is pretty reliable for me but I ordered 2 of these. One to replace the first one that arrived Dead on Arrival. Both units had the same issue, power not going from the brick to the unit itself. Two different US cables one for grounded and one not as well as trying it on two different computers with Thunderbolt 3 connections. Will I get another? Not until there is some kind of proof that the batch of units are actually have some level of quality control of the actual electronic components inside the power supply, cords and main unit.Never thought Id give a 1 star review to this company but they earned it.

Very well made, worked flawlessly and did not overheat.
Very well made, worked flawlessly and did not overheat.Easy to install drives. I needed more than 4 bays but otherwise a great drive

Great but..confusing design choices
Lemme get this straight, the thermal pads for the 4 NVME drives are on the separate plate to close them in with zero heat capacity to the rest of the chassis where the heat is suppose to disperse through and for the fan to then push that heat out to cool said drives? Is that right? Who designed this? Who let the chimp in?This thing can get actually hot, like hot enough to drop it, hot. Especially if you decide to drop 1TB+ of data on it all at once. My fault, clearly, but still a point to make, otherwise under normal operations it's 'fine'. That heat issue Bottlenecks the heck out of it and just stresses everything more than needed. I attached some heatsinks to the body and the door that is suppose to absorb the NVME drives heat and it seems to make it happier.Love that it can daisychain and how it has a display port; comes in handy for my second monitor and other dock for my MacBook but man it gets hot and that fan noise is persistent. NOT LOUD, but unless you're some freak that works in silence, you honestly won't even realize it's spinning.Otherwise, functionally, I am happy with this despite the drawbacks.

it's LOUD. Performance is ~ 2500MB/s using RAID 0.
I knocked off a star because I think it's misleading to note 40GB/s (5000MB/s) in the title and 8GB/s (1000MB/s) per lane in the product description (implies 4000MB/s in RAID 0). I expect this is being purchased primarily as an external drive (not a hub) and it doesn't appear it can reach these numbers as a drive. I built RAID0 using Samsung 970 EVO+ and again with Samsung 980 PRO but same performance limit of ~ 2500MB/s. Connected to Mac Mini M2 Pro (Thunderbolt 4 Ports). Knocked off another star because it's annoying that the fan annoying.
