A couple of reviews refer to this as also zesting citrus fruit, does anyone know how this works? Also, what is triangle shaped piece on the peeler?

You remove the zest in exactly the same way you would peel any other fruit or vegetable. This obviously will result in large strips of peel. You can then use a sharp knife to cut the strips of zest into fine shreds (julienne). The triangular piece is there to remove the "eyes" from potatoes etc.

Is the peeler apropritate for a left handed user?

It is really for right-hand use, but as it's such a good peeler, you could remove the blade/holder and reverse it. One of the lugs is not all that deep in the frame, so if you undid the blade and just prised apart the frame, it would be easy to reverse it for left-hand use.
