Great Sump-Pump Substitute for tight places
We bought a house a year ago and started experiencing minor flooding in the basement. We managed to track down the source of the water to a 4"x 4" Gravity drain that was backing up and flooding when it rained hard and when the washer emptied. Obviously 4x4 was too small for any sump pump to get into and so we started saving up for the 10K it will take to fix the basement.A few months ago when everything thawed and the flooding got worst I resolved to find a stop gap. After checking some forums I found some folks trying this bilge pump. I ordered it and a 12-volt power converter and set it up.Since I set it up there have been zero flooding even during the spring rains. The pump kicks on automatically every 2 1/2 minutes, if it feels water it pumps it dry, shuts off, and waits another 2 1/2 minutes. Our flooding was always prefaced with a build up of ground water into the drain so this pump it tucked down far enough to kick on as soon as water starts building up.Let me be clear if this is what you intend to use it for. It is not an out of box solution. You will need a basic understanding of hooking up electronics. You will need to connect the leads to post terminals and all that without instructions but that is what it is.It is not a solution to a habitually flooding basement but it is a cheap and workable stop gap solution between flooding and dropping lots of money for the permanent fix.

Reliable & Long Lasting
I've used these automatic Rule pumps aprox 25 years, originally it was known as the Platinum Series. They have proven to be reliable & long lasting. On my boat the pump was installed in the low spot of the bilge (at rest). You could hear it cycle every few minutes. The boat had twin batteries & always had a trickle charger to keep the batteries topped-off. My commerical building had a sump built into the lowest corner of the concrete slab. Due to large amounts of salt water the metal (110vac) sump pumps lasted approx 3 years, after several expensive pumps I decided to try the same automatic Rule bilge pump used in the boat. The Rule pump was powered by a 12v battery charger & worked fine manually, but never automatically (long lasting never had to be replaced). A spare pump was kept as a back-up & I took it with me when I retired. The house has a low spot at the edge of the driveway just in front of the garage door & the garage would flood with enough rain. I constructed a drain sump & used the spare auto Rule bilge pump (powered with a 12v battery charger). Again the pump worked manually, but not automatically so I decided to try a 12vdc power supply (thinking maybe the automatic circuit needed a cleaner constant 12vdc). Problem solved, the pump cycles & pumps the sump & returns to sensing mode automatically. This set-up has proven so reliable & necessary a back-up pump was ordered from Amazon.

I had no room for a separate float switch and this fits into the existing base of the Rule pump already installed.
Perfect fit in the sump of my Boston Whaler Supersport 13. The blue base was identical to the existing Rule bilge pump, so the new pump slipped in beautifully. The only difference between this pump and its predecessor is an extra wire that goes directly to the battery (it should be protected by a fuse, but I skipped this). The wiring diagram is clear and the pump works as advertised. Every two and a half minutes, it cycles on momentarily. If the bilge is dry, it goes off within two seconds. If it meets resistance (i.e. if there is water to be removed from the bilge), it runs until the resistance disappears. I have not had any issue with battery drain, even when leaving the boat unused for three weeks. The draw is insignificant. Highly recommended!Update: Pump crapped out after two seasons, which is a real disappointment. However, because it's great when it works, and not that expensive, I bought another.

NOT AS DESCRIBED BY AMAZON
Amazon should correct the inaccurate description of this item which states "......STARTS WORKING WHEN THE WATER LEVEL PUSHES THE FLOAT UP." As several other posters have noted, this pump DOES NOT have, or utilize, a FLOAT switch. Instead, it starts up every few minutes and it automatically measures resistance on the impeller shaft for a few seconds to determine whether it should continue to run. If there is water in the bilge, the shaft resistance causes the pump to continue to run until the bilge water is removed and no resistance is noted. The electrical drain during the resistance testing phase is minimal. This is an good product and will last 1-2 years in continuous operation. The only down side is that as the pump gets older, it could malfunction and run continuously in the absence of any water in the bilge. Two batteries -wired independently- are a must in any boat that has a working automatic bilge pump installed.

NOT THE BILGE PUMP PICTURED
Would it be too much to ask the seller to put the _____ correct photo of the product up? The original base would allow a new one to snap in place, but this one will not. I have a tight area and was counting on that, BASED ON THE PHOTO which obviously was a mistake. I really did not want to have to mount a new one. So, now I have wasted time, put out a hundred bucks and become annoyed. Please, for any other "suckers" put the correct photo up.This is not a bad product but very aggravating to have been misled by the photo. Rating of 1 due to aggravating frustration.

Great
I have an old (1977) aluminum 16' Lowe Bass boat For the last 15 years or so it has leaked a little. We just got back from a week in Arkanas. It has always been a pain turning on and off the pump. This little pump was great it comes on every 2.5 min. for a second. I can't even hear it run. My wife can hear it but I can't unless it is pumping water. It was great to go to the dock in the morning and not have alot of water in the boat. When we were on the lake for a while I had to remember to turn on the pump or we would be hualing water. I turned this pump on when I put the boat in the water and turned it off a week later when we took it out. You need a double throw switch because it has a continus run option. I never used continus run.

So far, so good
I wanted a sump pump for my cellar, relatively small volumes but a need to drain as low as possible. It comes on every couple of minutes, runs for 30 seconds, and drains out to the last 1/4 inch, the lack of a float switch makes this possible. It needs a car battery which needs a home battery charger once per week or so. It is small and clever, and so one might suspect long term reliability. Been going fine for two months.

Emergency pump, not good to keep bilges dry
pros: excellent price, simple design, descent capacity, fast delivery.cons: I was hoping that the pump would start, once you have a few centimeters of water in the bilge. The manual is not clear, so I needed to test it. I sprayed a huge amount of water in my bilge, until water level reached and exceeded the red line. The pump would not detect water and start at that level. I. stuck the pump in a water bucket, still would not work, initially. Only once I completely submerged the pump, it started to work. It's a good product for extreme emergencies, but its not the right product, if you just want a dry bilge. This became clear after testing the product.c
