Joshua Redman.
The eponymously titled debut album recorded in 1992 sees the 23 year-old tenor sax player leading a quartet in company with Kevin Hays, piano, Christian McBride, bass, and Gregory Hutchinson, drums; some substitution is made on selected tracks. This is a remarkably confident album from such a young musician; it's a pleasing mix of jazz classics and original compositions by Redman himself. Musically, he's a formidably talented player and he's well-matched by the rest of the group – McBride in particular is always a consummate soloist – but this is very much Redman`s shout; the band swings and he delivers stylish and thrilling performances throughout. And in case anyone was in doubt, he throws in a ravishingly beautiful interpretation of “Body and Soul” - THE tenor sax showcase number.A hugely satisfying album by any standards – check out the sound samples above. The CD has a playing time of just over 65 minutes.
