Personal Shopper

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I loved the locations. If one wants to see a spirit or ghost, then staying overnight in a big, empty, isolated house - guaranteed to put one's psychological state into hyperdrive - is the way to do it. Also, I was pretty much kept guessing about the outcome all the way through the film.As to seeing spirits/ghosts i.e. hallucinations, Maureen's psychological problems were a recipe for disaster. For example, Maureen was suffering grief from the loss of her brother. She also had the same potentially life-threatening medical condition that her brother, Lewis, had died from. She claimed that she was not frightened of this, but knowledge of her condition must surely have affected her mental state, unconsciously at the very least. In addition, her brother had been a medium, so the pair had been playing around with spiritualism, something that they knew nothing about. That was also bad news. To put the tin lid on it, Maureen liked neither her job nor her employer and she was only staying in Paris because it was there that her brother had said he would try and contact her from "the other side". In other words, however unwittingly she did so, Maureen went looking for trouble and, surprise, surprise, she found it.I have experienced hallucinations. One particular image was both frightening and comic. I saw, in the garden, a gigantic hornet with a huge, long sting. The hornet was more like a caricature hornet, than a real one. After I saw that thing, I became frightened of going back out into the garden. However, in a deliberate attempt to reduce my fear, I told myself that what I had seen was impossible. Such creatures just do not exist. I also laughed at how exaggerated the vision was - as I said, it was more like a caricature. By this means, I eventually I lost my fear, which ensured that the hallucination never recurred and that I was able to go back into the garden.

I admit I liked it more than expected & came away with a higher opinion of Kristen Stewart than I had before. I've seen her in many absolute turkeys but what this proves is she just needs to chose her roles more carefully, because she is a pretty good actress when given a script that player to her strengths (and her strength is not action heroine, it is arthouse movies like this).

My ears pricked-up when I heard about another Olivier Assayas/Kristen Stewart collaboration because I had very much enjoyed their 'Clouds of Sils Maria'. Unfortunately, this isn't quite as good. Much like Sils Maria, Kristen Stewart plays an American in Paris employed by wealthy Europeans, this time as a personal shopper. She is also a psychic/medium and she is in Paris because her similarly psychic twin brother died there recently and they promised each other that whoever died first would try to contact the other from beyond the grave. Oh, and she, in common with her late brother, has a genetic heart defect. After spending a night in the spooky old house that her brother's partner now owns to check for the potential new owners that there are no malevolent spirits present, she starts to receive creepy text messages and on returning from a shopping trip on behalf of a client, she discovers the client's brutally murdered body. To tell any more of the story here may spoil your enjoyment should you decide to watch it so I'll stop there. Part of the problem with the film was that, aside from Kristen Stewart's character, who is on screen pretty much for the whole film, we don't spend enough time with anyone else to get to know, or care, about them. This is in contrast to Sils Maria, where Stewart's relationship to/with Juliette Binoche is front and centre for most of the film. The central relationship in this film is between Stewart and her dead brother, who we never see. Stewart's performance is convincing, but it should be since she is only playing a version of herself. Stewart seems to have steered her post-Twilight career to the Indy/non-mainstream side of the street and I would be very interested to see her push a little further that way and appear in a role that stretched her acting ability more than this film did. A good film, well shot, well acted but, ultimately, a bit unsatisfying.

This is a good looking movie. It's a ghost story in some respects but it goes a bit deeper and unlike many films these days it stuck in my mind. If you just want jump scares there are better shockers out there, but if you like a psychological approach and clever photography then it's fairly entertaining and well made.

Der Film ist eine erneute Zusammenarbeit mit Olivier Assayas. In "Die Wolken von Sils Maria" spielt sie die Assistentin von Juliette Binoche, einer nicht mehr ganz jungen Schauspielerin in einer Sinnkrise. Schon da hat sie mich sehr beeindruckt, ich sah sie darstellerisch auf Augenhöhe mit der großartigen französischen Schauspielerin, und belohnt wurde sie als erste US-amerikanische Schauspielerin mit dem César für die beste Nebenrolle und weiteren Auszeichnungen.In "Personal Shopper arbeitet sie als eine Assistentin Maureen der Berühmtheit Kyra (Nora von Waldstetten), fährt für sie mit dem Motorroller durch Paris oder mit dem Zug nach London, wo sie für Kyra Designerklamotten und teuren Schmuck ersteht, bezahlt mit Blanko-Schecks.Vor 3 Monaten ist Maureens Zwillingsbruder an einem Herzinfarkt verstorben, den gleichen Herzfehler hat auch Maureen, sie könne damit aber 100 jahre alt werden sagt ihr der Kardiologe im Rahmen einer Echokardiographie (Ultraschalluntersuchung des Herzens). Sie müsse nur schwere körperliche und emotionale Belastungen meiden.Maureen und ihr Bruder sind medial begabt, und sie haben sich versprochen, dass derjenige, der zuerst stirbt, dem anderen aus dem Jenseits eine Botschaft zukommen lasse. In ihrer Freizeit hält sie sich öfter in dem großen, dusteren und schon recht leerstehenden Haus des Bruders auf und wartet auf ein Zeichen von ihm.Bei Kyra trifft sie einmal auf den abgelegten Liebhaber (Lars Eidinger) von Kyra, und einmal sehen wir sie bei Kyra, die jedoch mit einem Arbeitsgespräch beschäftigt ist und Maureen kaum zur Kenntnis nimmt.Im weiteren Verlauf erhält Maureen von unbekanntem Absender Botschaften auf ihrem i-Phone, der Absender scheint zu wissen, wo sie sich jeweils aufhält und fragt sie nach ihren geheimen Wünschen , z.B. dem mit einem Tabu belegten Anprobieren von Kyras Luxus-Dessous und Klamotten, ihren Gefühlen, wenn sie es dann tatsächlich gemacht hat. Wir sehen eine sehr lange Sequenz, bei der nur auf ihr Phone gehalten wird, Nachrichten erscheinen und Maureen mit nervösen Fingern Antworten tippt.Eines Tages findet sie Kyra ermordet in deren Wohnung vor, wo ist der teure Schmuck, den sie dort in Schatullen in Einkaufstüten abgestellt hat? Wer ist der anonyme SMS-Sender, der sie jetzt zu verschiedenen Treffpunkten bittet und dort nicht erscheint?Am Ende fliegt Maureen zu ihrem Freund in einen Golfstaat. Der Freund ist auf einer Tour in die Berge, in seiner Wohnung hat sie wieder übersinnliche Erfahrungen, Klopfzeichen und eine Botschaft, die besagen KÖNNTE!, dass es ihr eigener Geist ist, der sich meldet.Olivier Assayas mutet uns mit "Personal Shopper" einiges zu. Es geht um Spiritismus, Botschaften aus dem jenseits von Seelen, die noch einige Zeit zwischen Himmel und Erde wandern , bis sie endlich zur Ruhe kommen, die Verunsicherung des zurückgebliebenen Zwillings, der auf die versprochene Nachricht des Bruders wartet. Wer ist der am Ende Ektoplama kotzende Geist in dem verlassenen Haus des Bruders? Eine Frauengestalt, Maureen selber?Spiritismus, Psychospiele, ein Verbrechen und eine junge Frau, die sich von dem Verstorbenen noch nicht gelöst hat- oder er nicht von ihr?Der Film wirft viele Fragen auf und beantwortet letztlich keine. Und das mag auch der Grund sein, dass der Film stark polarisiert. Man kann sich tödlich langweilen - oder ist begeistert von Kristen Stewart und folgt ihr auf ihrer Reise, deren Ziel nicht klar ist. Selbstfindung von Maureen? Selbstfindung von Kristen Stewart, die erfolgreich ihr Twilight-Schnuckelchen-Image abgelegt hat?Mich hat der Film und vor allen Dingen Stewarts Spiel wie auch schon in "Die Wolken von Sils Maria" und dem Sci-Fi-Film "Equals" beeindruckt, hier zeigt sie, dass sie einen Film im Alleingang tragen kann, eine der bemerkenswertesten aktuellen Jungschauspielerinnen.Doc Halliday
