PERFECT for cutting blackberries and brush!
I live on a rural property with a lot of blackberries. I need to trim them back a fair amount to keep them from scratching the paint on our vehicles and we drive down our road. I've been using a Fiskars Brush Axe for the past 15 years or so, and while it's built really well and it has a hook at the end of the blade to stop the blackberry stalks from just sliding off before they're cut (we've found standard machetes to be pretty useless for blackberries with their straight blades....) the Fiskars never was super sharp in large part because of the thickness of the double-edge blade. This Japanese style chisel blade sickle is SHARP! It's got a thin blade kerf and a high carbon steel blade, and man it cuts through blackberries like a hot knife through butter!! To be fair, I think the Fiskars is has a thicker blade because it's designed to cut larger branches, but, this limits it's effectiveness for blackberry stalks. Add to that the plastic handle (while robust) can easily slip out of a a gloved hand (and we wear gloves to avoid blackberry thorns in our hands....) the sickle has a super comfortable rubber, non-slip handle. It's also a couple inches shorter than the Fiskars which makes it easier to store. So if you're looking for a super sharp brush knife to cut blackberries and other underbrush (and we've easily cut 1/2" diameter branches too) this sickle works great!!!

works well and sharp
This is very sharp! I use it for pygmy palm trimming, blue agave trimming, prickly pear cactus and it makes nice, easy, clean cuts.I also use it for ornamental grasses and yucca. It helps me keep my cactus garden looking clean, tightly manicured and well maintained.Use with caution it's sharp. Also clean with alcohol in-between uses and keep blade well oiled when being stored to keep it in good condition so it has a very long life. It is also wise to sharpen the blade in-between uses. Maintaining a sharp blade reduces possibility of injury.

Very sharp, very effective, but probably not OSHA approved
This is an extremely sharp and effective but can be dangerous to use. This sickle (although it is not called a sickle, I believe that is what it would be called in western cultures) is very sharp, easy to use (stooping or on your hands and knees) and cuts through grass, vines and undergrowth, including briars with ease, but requires you to get close to the work. It would be quite easy to cut your leg or opposing arm if you start day dreaming and it could be a serious injury. A large area would be easier to treat with a weed eater tool but for small areas that requires surgical treatment, it is great. I use it to clear out veggie or herb plants without impacting plants right nearby as you can simply slide the blade into tight places and remove plants on one side of the blade without damaging things on the backside.Just don't leave this laying around for the kids or grandkids to find.

Very well made, great carbon steel.
Great product, very well made. Extremely sturdy, the blade is a carbon steel. Came razor sharp from the factory, and it takes a great sharp edge very quickly.Highly recommend.

Excellent and Helpful Tool
This is a very helpful tool for trimming Flax Plants. Easily cut the necessary stalks without cutting all stems. Terrific help to speed the job up.

Sharp but rusts
This is super sharp and works great, however it does rust. I do wipe it clean after use too, but still.

Seems to be very good quality for the price.
Very sharp. Sturdy enough to cut down weeds and not worry the blade will flex.

Not quite what I expected but love it.
I bought this sickle with the intention of using it to clear weeds in my yard. I was disappointed by what I received. The handle feels light and flimsy despite being made of aluminum (although I would love to be proven wrong). I don't think this would stand up to anything beyond grass and weed cutting. I don't think it would last against the box oak sapplings I am littered with by my neighbors tree. The lack of weight in the handle causes the sickle to feel unbalanced when swinging it. I was also disappointed by the quality of the blade. As you can see for my second photo the blade was not sharpened correctly and actually has two different angles on the metal. My wife is a sharpener and so I showed her this obvious flaw in the blade and she said she can fix it however she can also see that the metal is soft and will need sharpening often.EDIT: after using the sickle, I found out that it is a much better tool than I thought. This is not a hacking tool like a machete. If you use it like one, it will act cheap and flimsy and will not work well. This is a pulling tool. Put it against a clump of grass or against a green branch and pull and it will slice like butter. When I tried to hack with the tool, it didn't do much at all and dented the blade. But now that I am using it correctly, I almost never get blade damage and it cuts really nice. The metal is still on the soft side so regular sharpening is recommended. But this tool has now become one of my favourite tools for yard cleanup. I recommend it for anyone who has grasses, weeds, or thin branches to clear.
