This is a brilliant film, highly recommend to any atheist out there.
Big cast names including Alan Rickman, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Allanis Morissette as god, & Jay & Silent Bob (a hilarious couple, they make good films). It's not so much a comedy, nor is it a spoof, but it's funny nonetheless due to the cast of comedians. It follows fallen two angles, expelled from heaven during Lucifer's revolt against Yahweh, trying to make their way back home as they can'tsuffer the lonliness of being without their creator any more. Touches on lots of Catholic Dogma and the ridiculousness of it, hence the name.

Not perfect but close
Product was in tact and works and I couldn’t find it cheaper elsewhere. When the disc was first put in it didn’t work because it was dirty but after a careful clean it works fine.

Will watch it again and again :-)
I really love this film and have watched it over and over.Kevin Smith's films are, on the face of it, pretty silly. The humour often appears rather of the 'toilet' variety. But then, he'll just slip in a little barb and I think, well, maybe there is something to this, after all. He does it with this film, right from the start, with an apology to all Duck Billed Platypus lovers. Ten minutes later, there's Alan Rickman, sporting a fine pair of wings, claiming to be The Metatron (i.e. Voice of God) and complaining bitterly to Linda Fiorentino who has just doused him with a fire extinguisher. What I didn't realise the first time I watched this film is just who all the actors are. Linda Fiorentino plays an abortion clinic doctor who turns out to be the 'Last Scion' (i.e. last living blood relative to Christ), Salma Hayek plays a 'muse' (and a pole dancer). Bud Cort is in it! (Who on earth is Bud Cort? Well, he's the guy who plays the lead role in the 'cult classic' Harold & Maude ). And George Carlin plays a Catholic bishop introducing the church's latest attempt at recruitment, the 'buddy Christ' (so who's George Carlin? Well, he was the hitch-hiker in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back , plus he's well-known for his black humour. Do a search on YouTube - you'll find loads). So, what Kevin Smith manages to do in this film, apart from make a very funny film, is make several political points, satirise a few 'Hollywood Blockbusters' and create a wonderful ensemble performance from a lot of very talented people. The DVD is distributed by Film 4, has 24 minutes of extra bits and pieces, has a 5.1 Dolby soundtrack, subtitles and stuff and is widescreen (2.35:1).Lovely film - have watched it over and over and will watch it again and again :-)

CATHOLIC FAILURE
Amusing critique of Roman Catholic dogma that attempts to get a hold on the origins of the religion - a Black Jesus Christ - in contradistinction to the alleged infallibility of the church he founded. The religion is shown to have lost its way and to have succumbed to formalism as a coping mechanism for its endemic failure to have the very faith in itself enjoined upon others. Only God does not make mistakes, and in the church's view that this is also true of itself, lies the source of its many failings. This movie is not going to convince anyone to embrace the faith, but the pot-shots at contemporary Christian hypocrisy, idolatry and the refusal to think for oneself are well-made. Particularly, the desire to rewrite biblical teaching (God is a woman, a 13th apostle, etc) to offer a deeper understanding of the faith, as in Kazantzakis Last Temptation of Christ.Where it fails is in not seeing that religion must form deep relationships with political power in order to have any effect in the world of mammon. This combination of faith and force is the true reason for the existence of dogma, but this film is too embedded in its own acontextual religious discourse to pay enough attention to its own theme.Analyzing rather than preaching the church’s support for the Holocaust and the Atlantic slave trade, for example, is no substitute for dramatic exegesis. (It was probably inevitable that a film about Catholicism would be preachy.) This is a film of abstract ideas, not flesh-and-blood characters, and often has difficulty rising above the level of an undergraduate essay. The other problem with this film is the acting. Many of the performers are uncertain of how to play their parts - to the detriment of the movie, as a whole. Only the enjoyably-evil Jason LEE, the hilarious Jason MEWES & the ultra-feminine Salma HAYEK play their respective roles with anything approaching the genuine commitment (& relish) needed to help the audience get under the skin of the drama. Yet, when all is said and done, it is better than something like the execrable Da Vinci Code.

Avatara's review of "Dogma"
"Dogma" is the fourth film written and directed by Kevin Smith (also continuing to play the role of Silent Bob) and is a tongue in cheek look at the Catholic faith in modern times. There is a stellar cast that truly shine as an ensemble and who portray their characters with great ease and professionalism. The script is fantastically funny and thought provoking, posing questions about angels, demons, idols, muses, God, apostles, prochoice, Jesus and the Catholic Church. If you are open minded you will love this movie however if you are a practicing Catholic, you may find it blasphemous. I believe that "Dogma" puts religion perfectly in its place in a most humorous way whilst delivering a story that is very entertaining to say the least. This is my second favourite film from Kevin Smith and co and is still entertaining every time I watch it. If you have a slightly twisted sense of humour and love irony you will really love "Dogma".
