Q: Can these be used indoors?

Because it's charcoal burning, I wouldn't use it indoors unless you have a range hood directly over it to vent out smoke. I've seen them used indoors in hibachis in Japanese restaurants in Japan, as well as in the U.S., but they have some type of smoke suction device nearby. It's great charcoal. No nasty odor. Hot and long burning. But you need to make sure of its origin. If this is from Thailand (or thereabouts) or Japan I would trust it. If from China, no.

Q: Are these made in Japan?

In Japan they uses Bichotan, this is called Bicho. See another users review to see the difference.

Q: What kind of wood is this binchotan made from? I have never heard of a "matiew tree." Is that same as ubame oak?

It is similar to ubame oaks which grows in Laos. The ubame oak grows in Japan.
