Is this product oil based ???

It is solvent based which is also known as 'oil based' so yes...it is very sticky and gooey so i advise wear gloves when applying. It did a great job protecting a plywood double door i made at the bottom of our garden that separates the lawn from the rose bushes at the very back.

would this take on a bench previously treated with hardwood sealer oil?

Sorry we don't have a decorative product that will paint on top of oil

Is it better to be used with a roller or a brush?

I used the product on garden tables and chairs. I used several brushes as the product is sticky.

Not so far, I varnished an outdoor teak bench and it still looks as good as the day I put it on 2 months later.
