The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui

Presentation of actual written material from Usui's classes, with Petter's analysis and explanation
I already had a paper copy of this book and bought the Kindle version, well, frankly because I misplaced it. This slim-looking volume is a treasure to anyone involved or even interested in Reiki. As a Master level Reiki, I want it nearby at all times, and to study it often. The cover of the book lists Dr. Mikao Usui and Frank Arjava Petter as authors. The Amazon article lists Usui and Christine M. Grimm as authors and leaves Petter out entirely, which is incorrect. Grimm did a wonderful TRANSLATION from GERMAN to English. Frank and others including his wife Chetna (who is Japanese) translated the Japanese material, originally to Frank's native German. Dr. Mikao Usui was the founder of modern Reiki, which deals with Chi or Ki but is specifically devoted to healing and has safety measures built in to prevent harm (Chi Gong is powerful, but has martial disciplines as well as healing ones). It had been believed by many that none of his material was written down and that he only taught orally and somewhat secretively. It is no coincidence that this book revealing otherwise has a Forward by William Lee Rand, who researched Usui's life and practice in Japan and himself dispelled many fallacies concerning Usui. Rand founded the Karuna Reiki discipline and has done much to shine light on the subject of Reiki in the West. To be clear, "The Original Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui" is really more the inclusion and subject matter of the book, a research project of Frank Arjava Petter and his wife Chetna. Petter lives, practices and teaches Reiki in Japan - the first Westerner to do so. He gives us some of the historical and Buddhist background of Usui. This book has quite a bit of analytical and anecdotal material by Petter, and all of it is valuable, especially his elegant exposition of Reiki meditation. Simple and profound, that part alone would be worth the price of the book. However, as advertised, it does include translated material from Usui's handbook, with photo illustrations done by Petter using a professional model and showing hand positions, et cetera, as well as some descriptive artwork. Petter states in the Introduction though that this is a SECTION of the handbook. So I expect there will be further presentations of the remainder of the Usui materials provided to Petter by the legendary Japanese healer Oishi. Petter points out that the Western hand positions are a simple subset of a greater variety of positions shown in the Usui materials. They are not wrong, there are simply more. And there are more ways of focusing Reiki power than those. Touch is ONE tool of several, depending on the patient's needs and condition. But they are an important one. The Handbook lists maladies with the specific positions to treat them, along with observations of other considerations by Petter along the way. I could go on and on about this book, but if you are into Reiki and interested in the actual details including what Usui taught, buy it. At the risk of sounding trite, it's awesome.

There is nothing like reading the handbook of the founder of any art, in this case Dr. Mikao Usui's Reiki.
I have been into numerous martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Hanbo-Jutsu and Kenjutsu) and other universal energy arts (Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga and Reiki) for more than fifty five years. Since I have been a Reiki Master I have read countless books on Reiki and other healing arts; however, I had never read this excellent manual (The original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui with a forward by William Lee Rand) until recently. This excellent 79 page text explains clearly how the rediscoverer of Reiki taught this universal healing art. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not a comprehensive Reiki text but it does show 80 hand positions (including Gassho-prayer position). I notice in this manual that it also shows the use of the fingers in several positions. It also mentions that it is not always necessary to touch for 3 to 5 minutes as it depends on the area you are working on with a subject etc.The following material is covered in this manual: The Buddhist background of Reiki, the origin and the goal, the heart sutra, the three pillars of Reiki, Gassho, Reiji-Jo, Chiryo, touching and healing, the breath, the tanden, the healing techniques, and Reiki Ryoho Hikkei-Dr. Usui’s hand positions. If you are seeking the most authentic presentation of Dr. Mikao Usui’s Reiki method this is a must book to have in your library.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Chair/Seated Tai Chi, Qigong, and Yoga for seniors and the physically challenged).

Useful learning
I did enjoy reading this book. The opening section describes the origins of the teachings, and how the author came to be in possession. The main part of the book contains the hand positions one would use for a variety of ailments. The photos are clear and show exact where each placement should be. It did the a little time to understand how the references worked, but once I caught on, it was pretty clear where I'd need to place my hands. The appendix does have all the reference photos together and numbered, which helps as well. Definitely a book I'd refer back to over and over.

Wonderful New Information
I just finished reading through this delightful book and found it so informative. Knowing it was written using Dr. Usui's own text for his students reassured me that this was the real thing. We, as Reiki practioners have been led to believe that Reiki was taught only orally and there was no written text. It is amazing to find that this is not true - there were textbooks that were used as tools during class. It has certainly been a new tool I will use in my practice because I was not taught specific treatments for certain conditions. This book spells it out, complete with pictures of hand positions and explanations. It is like a breath of fresh air for me and I feel much closer to the source of the rediscovery of this ancient practice.
