Audubon Seeds 'n More Metal Hopper Bird Feeder Model 7452R
J**N
Not safe for small birds
I bought this feeder mainly because it was not squirrel-proof (i.e., the hopper didn't close owing to a bird's weight). A previous feeder with weighted bar actually trapped a bird when the bar dropped. Imagine my horror to find a bird trapped in this feeder. The hopper openings are large enough that the bird wedged its head inside and couldn't get free. My husband had to get his metal cutter and cut between the openings so that we could ease the poor bird out. Fortunately it flew away. I will now stay clear of feeders that could trap small birds in this way. Audubon should redesign their hooper-style feeders to address this issue.

Fading After Just 4 Months Made this Beautiful Feeder an Eyesore
I researched Amazon to find a nice looking, good quality feeder. This is what I purchased. After 4 months, I am surprised and disappointed at how much it has faded. I had to remove suet feeders, as the suet attracted raccoons (I did not factor this in to the 1 star rating) .Also, as you can see, it is not squirrel proof. I had to purchase the deflectors to try and keep them away. If the fading had not occurred, this would have been a 4 star product for me. Attached is a picture of the inside after 4 months and another of the outside, so that you can see the fading.UPDATE: After contacting the manufacturer and sending pictures, I update this product rating to a 4. They provided excellent customer service and promptly sent me a replacement feeder with promise that they have updated the coating with better UV protection. I will update rating to 5 stars in a few months if this is the case.

Not as advertised.
This feeder is cheaply made. The pins that hold the lid on are so loose they just hang there. After just a slight rain the seed inside is getting wet. The rain is just following the pin no matter how much I tried to push it against the feeder. I added some hot glue to seal the pin but it will have to be sealed each time I fill the feeder. The lid has an indent where the latch is attached and the paint didn't cover the indented area. The handle that was sent with the feeder isn't even the one shown in the picture. It's a badly made design that uses cutter pins to hold on. Very thin. Also, both suet holders don't even close properly. The place where the doors attach are to tight and doesn't allow for the door to close. There is a very large gap at the top and it seems to want to spring open. Time will tell if this is the case. I didn't realize all the issues until it was set up. I don't think this one is going to last at all. The last feeder like this I bought was made in the USA and has lasted over 10 years. I don't give this one 10 months. And the fact that it has already allowed my seed to get wet is terrible. I will be looking for a better made one.

We love this feeder..so do the birds.
We’ve had this feeder now for 2 years and except for being weather worn is still functioning well and actually, while I’m writing this, I’m sitting in the living room watching flickers, finches, ladderbacks and more chowing down. I’m getting another one for the other side of the house.AND- SMALL BIRDS DONT GET TRAPPED UNLESS YOU DONT CLOSE IT. Operator error - not the feeders fault!!

Tough and Reliant
I finally had to add a new coat of paint to this bad boy. I've had it for 3 years, and the only issue I've had is that the paint started to fade too much after ~1,000 days of nonstop sun, rain, snow, and other weather. No rust, no broken parts - even the plastic windows have remained clear and pretty much scratch free.Quick coat of spray paint after taping up the little windows and it's good as new.

Do not recommend
Birds did not even like this feeder. Would not come for weeks. The rod that goes across does not move, is not squirrel proof, and the holes for feeding are not a safe size. After quite awhile, (so much so that the red had faded on the feeder) a few birds ventured to feed. I went out to check on all my feeders, and found a poor little sparrow who had died with its head stuck in the hole of the feeder. I was sick! I immediately threw it out. I had a negative feeling about it for awhile and should have gone with my instincts. I do not recommend this particular feeder.

Not the quality or design that we expected
Very disappointed . I expected a better quality and design. First of all the perch is square, very difficult for birds to perch on. Our old wooden bird feeder used to be visited continuously by cardinals, bluebirds, finches etc, no birds have managed to land on this in 6 weeks. My husband finally followed the suggestion of putting a second platform for landing on the feeder and now we have birds. Secondly, the rivets that hold the top have already broken and we had to replace them with screws.I wonder if the Audubon society has checked the quality and construction lately!

Rugged design that helps to prevent wasted food
I purchased this feeder after losing several others to bears & this feeder is still hanging in there a year later... much longer than others have lasted. I have mine mounted on a solid steel pole with a squirrel baffle placed on the pole a few inches below the feeder & I never have anything but birds eating out of it. And unlike the cedar feeders, the seeds don't get soaked and start rotting inside the feeder. My suet holders have never come off so far. I could only get them to snap securely into place if I installed them so that the door opening was facing down - but that makes it messy when I have to open it up to refill the suet. While the design isn't perfect, it is a major improvement over other feeders I have used. I also love the fact that the blue jays can't dump most of the seeds on the ground like they've done with the cedar feeders.
