Adequate for Exams, but Lacking Depth
The OCR Gateway GCSE Physics Student Book is a serviceable resource for students preparing for the modern GCSE syllabus, but it shares the common flaw of oversimplification found in many contemporary textbooks. The explanations are pared down to such an extent that they often fail to convey the underlying principles of physics in a meaningful way.The book covers all the topics required for the OCR Gateway syllabus, including motion, forces, electricity, waves, and energy. While it is structured logically and includes helpful diagrams, summaries, and practice questions, the content sometimes feels superficial. Concepts like wave behaviour and electrical circuits are explained in ways that focus more on rote exam preparation than on fostering real understanding. When my daughter was studying for Physics GCSE, we frequently turned to older textbooks from the 1970s for a more rigorous approach. These older books not only explained the material more clearly but also instilled a sense of how physics connects to the real world—something this book lacks. This textbook is sufficient for meeting the requirements of the modern GCSE exam, but for students who want to develop a deeper grasp of the subject, supplementary resources will be necessary. It gets the job done, but it’s far from inspiring.
