Five years ago a fatal decision cost David (Mads Mikkelsen, Casino Royale) the life of his seven-year-old daughter. Now he's discovered a door—a time portal that will give him the opportunity to rewrite the past and save his daughter's life. But what appears to be a miraculous chance for redemption turns deadly when David learns the horrifying truth of the alternate reality he has entered...and altered.

Needed some escape from my own situation. Here I found out early how bad things were for someone else. We all make mistakes, but the protagonist here brought much suffering on himself and others with his selfish carelessness. You might recall other movies where extreme measures were taken to ameliorate an earlier fumble. Slightly different here; the solution is stumbled upon, apparently handed out by benign forces. But it turns out not to be a free lunch after all. Payment will be costly. That's the bare outline of a gripping tale. Will keep you engaged, though it might discourage a rosy view of what must be done to live comfortably while being flawed. Some just walk that lonesome valley.Nothing lasts forever.

huge Mads fan
I enjoy most of Mads Mikkelsens work so this was something I was happy to add to my collection. It was received in the time frame advised in fine condition; I am satisfied with my purchase.

OPEN THIS DOOR!
For anyone not familiar with the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, or for those only aware of him as James Bonds nemesis Le Chiffre in "Casino Royal" prepare for a treat! This has to be one of the best Mads Mikkelsen films I've ever seen. Well written, wonderfully provocative and beautifully filmed (the use of light to express emotion and tension is palpable) this is a film that is difficult to describe without ruining the subtext - a magical psychological mystery might be the best interpretation. All the acting is superiour and Mads as a rather thoughless painter/serial cheater who deeply resents the demands put upon him by his wife and daughter is profound, not only in its intensity but in its gradual and powerful emotional resolution as he wrestles with his actions, his desires to fix the mistakes of his past and to avoid the consequences. Is he halucinating his experiences due to his intense guilt?Has he traveled to another world or another level of reality? Can one ever really start again? I must strongly recommend that English speaking viewers watch the German language version with English subtext as the English dubbing is at best annoying and at worst comical in tone. While I think that I'll always hold "The Green Butchers" as my favorite Mads movie (so sweeet so funny so sociopathic!) and "Valhalla Rising" as his most stunningly and mesmersing performance - "The Door" is a film that I will come back to again and again - and not simply for Mads' delicious posterior ;)...well not entirely for that!

Psychological Thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat
Loved this film. It explores themes of the loss of loved ones and how we all wish we could turn back the clock to before the loved one was gone. As with everything in life, though, there are consequences to everything and this film does a beautiful and stark job of illustrating such consequences. Mikkelsen is Danish; I am bilingual and speak German (I'm American) so I was confused when I read his lips and could see that he was actually speaking German but there was a native German dubber svoicing his lines. One of the extras included with the film explains that the producers did that because Mikkelsen's mother tongue isn't German. I think that step was unnecessary, but it's in there. On Prime Video, you can turn off the English subtitles if you want. Overall a tense and heartbreaking film but so very worth seeing.

This is not the film that is being reviewed.
The movie being reviewed here is not the one shown which happens to be of the same name. I have seen that particular movie, and while very good, it is not in the same genre as the actual movie being shown here. The title and stars are correct, but the reviews are of the Helen Mirren movie of the same name. That being said, this movie is very rich in ethos and depth. Fans of movies that depict the many ways in which we interact with and influence people's lives, whether they be family, friends, or even strangers will be moved by this movie.

♥️
Being a Mads fan I’m little biased. But a good look at lost and forgiveness. Subtitles aren’t a problem. I love different ascents. I unique film.

At first the premise seemed a bit ridiculous, but it came together well.
Thankfully this was subtitled and not dubbed. A good German film about parallel worlds & time travel to try to correct the past. An interesting and somewhat satisfying ending, not quite like any I've seen before. Well worth the time.

Not only one of my favorite time travel movies, but of all ..so glad to be able to enable subtitles!
In trying to write a screenplay, I'm researching similar type movies and this is not only one of the best time travel movies I've seen, it's up there with my all time favorites. This movie goes to show less IS more. A great way to pull off a movie which could be very expensive and not detract anything. Subtitles: I think this is a German movie, I was dismayed at first thinking I couldn't enable English subtitles but was very pleased to find that I could do so. I used to hate watching subtitled movies but now I'm past that.

more Mads Mikkelsen
A spooky unsentimental thriller with a great cast [ mostly german ] . A man has the oppotunity to travel back in time and save his daughter . I guess this is sci fi but more in the what if catogery [ think JG Ballard or Invasion of the body snatchers etc ] This is a film to make you think . However to me the ending was silly / confusing and I didnt feel that the film was finishes and I went to bed really angry ; so maybe i didnt really enjoy this filmat all ?

Fantastic film for those who like to be kept guessing
This is a fantastic film for those who like to be kept guessing. Good cast and from the outset the plot immerses you in the film - the concept of the film isn't unique but it is executed so well and it just keeps you guessing.

Loved the film
Loved the film, so different from the usual British /American stuff. I find Danish films a very refreshing change from the usual drivel. The actors are exceptionally good too.
