How wide do the clips open? I want to use on the edge of some quilts.

Not very wide they are small. Also if I grab my drapes and fling then shut they simetimes pull our of the clip. They are pretty but if you have kids or anyone who is not going to be careful these are not the clips

Can these be used with a one inch curtain rod?

Yes! I'm using the 1.7 inch pewter rings on a 1 inch rod, and they're great! For anyone who prefers to deal in numbers, I just measured, and it looks like the interior diameter is about 1 3/8 inch (or 35 mm).

how many rings are needed?

One hook every 4 to 7 inches, depending on weight of fabric.
