Russian Revolutionary Posters: From Civil War to Socialist Realism, From Bolshevism to the End of Stalinism Paperback – 5 Mar. 2015

I purchased the paperback version, which is a beautiful book. The book is larger than i thought it might be as a paperback, which shows off the pages to their best. It is packed full of great examples of Russian Revolution Posters .Its an excellent buy, at a great price.

This is a simply superb collection of Soviet era posters. I have loved his previous collections (The Commissar Vanishes and Red Star Over Russia) but i feel this is even better. My better half is a designer and she was amazed at the variety of artistic styles found within the posters. His commentary really adds to your understanding.

You can’t pull out the posters like in another similar book but there are so many examples. Fabulous book and descriptions. Buy buy buy!,,

I was quite happy with this book as there were some posters that I hadn't seen before. However, I didn't expect so many posters of the Stalin era, I thought they would be concentrated more around the time leading up to and the event itse

Gorgeous book, quality wise, great pictures and colour. There is a lot of info at the bottom of the images but I would have loved even more text! But I can't complain about a book that is ONLY filled with pictures.

Reasonable coverage, average picture quality, no major flaws. That's about as much as needs saying. So anything else would be superfluous, just to fill your preset review "guidelines".

I am very impressed with the book of Soviet era posters. David King did an excellent job organizing the book. I would recommend it anyone interested in art form.

The story of how David King tracked down these fragile, rare, posters is almost as gripping as the posters themselves. The biographies of the poster artists are equally fascinating. The whole volume is very informative for the Soviet history buff. For example I finally learned the origins and meaning of the "ROSTA" and "TASS" acronyms I had previously encountered on examples of Soviet poster art. If you liked "Red Star Over Russia" and wanted more examples of the posters and the context of their creation, this is the book for you. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Mr. King's books on early Soviet history, and hope he "keeps 'em coming".

20世紀前半のソビエト連邦で制作された宣伝ポスター集。社会主義政権下における、いわゆる「プロパガンダポスター」を集めたものだが、重要な作家の作品が数多く掲載されており、アート好きには見逃せない書籍となっている。書名にある通り、ポスターの制作年代はロシア革命後のボリシェビキ政権から、それに続くスターリンの治世まで。この時代は「ロシア構成主義」「ロシアン・アヴァンギャルド」および「社会主義リアリズム」という、ロシア近代美術史を形成した三つの流れを含んでいる。前二者は民衆の自発的な芸術運動であり、後者は国家による公式芸術。そこで社会主義リアリズムを低いところに置く風潮が一般的だが、本書を眺めるとそれほど単純ではないことがよく分かる。構成主義や前衛芸術はスターリン治世下で否定されたものの、画家たちの多くはそうした「国家による芸術統制」にしぶとく反逆し続けたからだ。本書はそうした芸術と政治のかかわりを読み解くうえでも有用だが、「西側」に棲む人間にとっては、知られざる近代アートの扉を開く（というより、扉の隙き間から覗き観る）愉しみもある。掲載作家のうち、特に面白く感じたのはアレクサンドル・ロトチェンコとグスタフ・クルーツィス。どちらもフォトモンタージュを駆使した技法で知られており、両者の作品が質の高い印刷で観られるのは貴重。またニーナ・バトリナ（表紙の作品も彼女の手になるもの）の力強いタッチも印象深い。掲載作品はスターリンやレーニンの偶像化と、第二次大戦にむけた意識の高揚や反独（反ファシズム）をテーマとしたものが目立つ。クラシック音楽の愛好家であれば、ショスタコーヴィチの交響曲第五番などを聴きながら本書を眺めると、東部戦線に漂う硝煙をよりリアルに感じることができるだろう。なお本書の編者は旧ソ連アートの研究家デヴィッド・キング。掲載作品は彼の個人コレクション（ロンドンに私設ミュージアムを開設している由）からの精選で、それぞれの作品に丁寧な解説文を寄せている。ひとつ残念なのはスターリンの死後に再興したアヴァンギャルドの作品群が、本書では観ることができないこと。キングの守備範囲からは外れるのかもしれないが、続編に期待したいところだ。ロシアの近代アートについてより深く知りたい方には、やはりキングによる大著Red Star Over Russiaを併せて求められることをお勧めしたい。
