I am so happy I bought this meter! I have been using the Alpha Trak 2, and while it did a good job, the strips were very expensive and I have to test my little guy several times a day right now, along with doing a curve once a week, until we get his BG under control, so I decided to try the Advocate Pet Test meter and strips because they are much less expensive. I am sooooo glad I did. Not only are the strips less than half the price of the Alpha Trak 2 strips, it is easier for me to do the test because the Advocate meter has a mechanism that causes it to draw the blood up into the strip, kind of like a sucking/drawing action, so I need to use less blood for the test, ultimately making it easier on my little Maltese, who by the way, is the love of my life.I like the meter because I don't have to code it and it has a very easy to read format so I can test my dog, or one of my cats, should God forbid, one of them develop diabetes as well. The set up was super fast and easy, too. I will make one suggestion.......don't put the strip all the way in until you are sure you have a blood drop ready to test because as I found out through trial and error, if you don't get enough blood on the strip the first time, it will give you a false low reading, like ridiculously low...as in 26 or 28, or something questionably low, or it will just say LO.This meter comes with 25 starter strips, 21 gauge lancets, control solution, and a nice carrying case. I would suggest buying an additional box of 50 test strips because 25 will go by pretty fast, especially if your pup is like mine and needs several tests daily. I found a box of 50 on Amazon for $23.24 with free shipping, at the time of this posting. Advocate PetTest Strips, 50 StripsAt the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how much more cost effective the Advocate system is over the Alpha Trak 2, if the results are inaccurate, so I decided to put them side-by-side, use the same drop of blood, and test them at the same time to see if there was any difference in the results, and if so, to what degree. I did this on 5 separate tests and the largest variance I found was 3 points, one was 117, the other was 114. I took a photo of one of the comparison tests, one was 87, the other was 88. I would say that is definitely close enough to be called accurate. The date is off by one day and the time is showing a.m. on one and p.m. on the other, but that is because I messed up when I was setting up the Alpha Trak 2 and I am too lazy to fix it. LOL. So although the dates/times do not match exactly on the meter in the photo, I can assure you the results are from the same drop of blood, taken at the same time and compared immediately.Since canine diabetes is not reversible, testing is something I will be doing for the rest of my Maltese's life. He is only 6 years old now, so I am looking at having to buy test strips for the next 10+ years. With the great prices on Amazon, I will be saving thousands of dollars by switching to the Advocate meter and test strips. My little pup is everything to me and I want to make sure his diabetes is controlled so he can live a long, happy life, right by my side.

The Pettest Advocate Meter is excellent , while not the cheapest , it’s by far the best, I use it with the Genteel Lancet on my little Norfolk Terrier.

I had purchased the Advocate PetTest Glucose Monitoring System to replace the Covetrus Vet Gluco Guage that I have. I do know that the Covetrus is accurate as I have taken My Cat Sam's Blood Glucose before going to the Vet and told them my reading and then they would test and receive the same/very similar readings. This happened at the Animal Hospital as well. This is enough to convince me that my Covetrus Vet Gluco Guage is accurate and reliable. The problem is that the test strips were so much more expensive. I decided to try the Advocate PetTest Glucose Monitoring System due to the economic benefit.I received the Advocate PetTest Glucose Monitoring System. At 11:15 PM (ish), I ran the control test. The control sample came back in the level 3 range as it should have. I then took My Cat Sam's BG . I did also have two test strips left for my Covetrus, so I decided to compare. The Covetrus read the BG at 463 and Advocate read the BG at 512. That is a difference of +49! The next day at 11:00 AM I decided to compare again with my last Covetrus Strip. The Covetrus read the BG at 517 and Advocate read the BG at 455. Now a difference of -62? I ran the control test again, and it again tested in the level 3 range (383 I believe). So, I poked my poor boy again and did 2 more BG readings on the Advocate. The first was 583 (difference of +66), and then the next sample just read "HI".Let's process this: Within minutes the Advocate gave 3 readings of 455, 583, then HI (in the midst of a successful control reading). I believe this to be too much of a difference to trust this device. Just based on having another (trusted) meter to compare with and receiving two very different BG numbers is very scary, but to add that I have received 3 very different BG results within minutes is just horrifying.I will be requesting to return the Advocate PetTest Glucose Monitoring System.Now, I will happily pay for the expensive but reliable Covetrus Test Strips.I have attached photo's. The time on the two meter's will be different by one hour. I have had the Covetrus for almost a year and have never adjusted for daylight saving's time. I promise that these tests were taken within minutes of each other and are not an hour apart. My Cat Sam will vouch for me. I urge all Advocate PetTest Glucose Monitoring System owners to please do a triple BG test to see what results you receive. Are they consistent? My Cat Sam also request's that you please urgently do this on behalf of all other Cat's.Thank you.

My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes; I’m diabetic too so tried using my own meter with her but it was requiring more blood than I could get from her and wasting strips. This meter was so much easier, I feel like the lancing device works better and a lot less blood needed. I checked it against my own meter a couple of times with myself and it’s accurate.

This monitor is horrendous. The test strips are so expensive and I commonly have to use 2 or 3 just to get one reading. My poor cat. Her ear could literally be dripping blood and it either doesn’t register or gives an E-5 error. With the strips being about 85 cents each it’s very frustrating. Like most people that I know in my position I’ll just get the human monitor and their strips, which are much cheaper. There’s a formula you can use to decipher blood glucose levels from human monitors on your pet. I just wish I took a picture of how much blood I had on the strip and still wasn’t getting a reading. It was absurd. And it’s like that at least 1 of 3 times I try to get a reading.Update: without asking, they reached out to me for support and they did refund my money no questions asked, without having to return the product. I will say that after trying several different procedures, if you slide the end of the test strip into the blood sample, almost like you’re scooping it up, it does work about 2 out of 3 times.
