Skinny Legs and All

Slaying Sacred Cows With Playful Profundity
I have read four Tom Robbins novels now and, although I have thoroughly enjoyed them all (Jitterbug, Cowgirls, Woodpecker and this), 'Skinny Legs & All' has definitely lingered in my mind the strongest upon completion. The pull and momentum of the storyline towards the climax is gripping and I think Robbins juggles the disparate elements of the main plot and subplots most effectively here without dropping a ball. So impressed was I by this book that I felt compelled to review it here on Amazon to any prospective buyers. My advice? Do it! Take the plunge! While this may sound pathetically pretentious, I honestly think that Tom Robbins' novels are mind-expanding in the best possible way, genuinely equivalent to an intense psychedelic experience but without risk of injury or prosecution! They open doors in the mind and alter perception on many levels. The analogy of Salome the dancer peeling back the layers of her seven veils with all the social, religious, political and financial blinkers foisted on human culture is vibrantly memorable.I can understand why some are turned off by Robbins' style; his unique word-worlds may seem overly stylised at first but, once you get past the disorienting blur of uncompromising surrealism, you are rewarded with a true heart of timeless wisdom.

Wonderful!
When I began reading this, I thought, "What on earth is this?"I couldn't understand it at all. But the light gradually became brighter, and by the end, I never wanted it to stop. This is certainly one of the best books I have ever read, and I have read many. It contains the solution to world peace, how to do art, the importance of philosophy and the unimportance of politics. It is a puzzle wrapped up in an enigma. The characters are larger than life (but I have met people just like some of them).I don't think I will ever be quite the same person after reading this.

A guide to the present
This book is one of the greats! As I'm an adult I can no longer laugh like a baby, those kinds of bubbly ripples. I laugh a lot, but not like that. Reading this book though, it really feels like that kind of laugh inside my head. It is just brilliant, the plot, everything - amazing.

Just like Robbins' others, raw and wonderful...
This book is so complex, clever, engaging, and enlightens one to escape the 'veils' of man made code. Ego, religion, money, linear time amongst others.I feel that Tom sums up the meaning of life in this book. A wonderful belittlement of life and probably the route to happiness!
