Great Potential, But Not Yet
When I first saw this unit at NAMM 2024 in Anaheim, I was very excited. The features that I'll discuss later were exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, there's too many issues that make 1.0 not a viable product for me, and hence I've returned it.For purposes of this review, I'm comparing it to the Roland AE-10 and Yamaha YDS-150, both of which I've had for a couple of years.First, the good. The transpose switch was potentially for me, the game changer. Often when I'm rehearsing or playing with a band they want to change to a different key. This was the perfect solution, to be able to change keys without having to transpose a chart in your head. At my age, I just can't. This was huge (but ultimately the downfall, see below). The bi-directional BT, rechargeable batteries, and the dongle in the bottom, charging when its in there, are great. I also love the main display, and the upper display. Finally, my bandmates think that the trumpet sound is better in the NUX than the Roland, and I agree. Now the bad, when I saw it at NAMM, I found an error. Pressing the G# side key, and then pressing the F key does not produce an F like it does on a regular sax. I pointed this out to staff in the NUX booth, and I'm happy to say that they fixed it. However, in fixing it they created another problem. Sax players know that there's at least three ways to play middle Bb. While two of them work here, pressing B and F doesn't produce a Bb on this instrument. Since I often use that, it was a huge disappointment.Next, while the transpose key is huge, when changing instruments, say from an Alto to a Tenor, it doesn't automatically change the key from that instrument's native key to the new instrument's native key, in this example Eb to Bb (like the Roland and Yamaha do). That means when changing instruments you have to make dual adjustments. No.Another issue is that the sound of any particular instrument is not consistent through the keys. In other words, an A sounds like a different instrument than an E and you finger through. I've seen this noted in a YouTube video, and my bandmates definitely noticed. On this "note", the sax sounds are better on the Roland or Yamaha than the NUX.There are multiple synth settings. But frankly, they all sound the same, even though they're each called something else. Also, there is not synth string sound, which is what I use the most on the Roland to help out our keyboard player.Others will point out the differences between the NUX and similar instruments in terms of having a reed feel, etc. I get that, but if the above things weren't an issue, I could live with it.Since these are firmware/software issues, they should be fairly easy to correct in an update. Thus, I contacted U.S. support, which forwarded my concerns onto the factory. Unfortunately, the factory has not responded within my return window, so back it goes. A shame, as I was really excited. I'll try again with 2.0, and hopefully it'll be the instrument that I was hoping for.
