Snapper Slapper - 7 ounce Catches Large Red Snappers
I was first "given" a white Snapper Slapper by a deckhand on the Captain John out of Galveston several years ago. I still have it this many years later and it still hauls in larger sized red snappers. (No, this lure is NOT good for redfish as someone else wrote in a review). This is a great lure for red snapper in deep water with strong currents (which is what you have off the Texas coast 40 to 50 miles out and in 150 to 250 ft water. The 7 ounce version gets to the bottom / strike zone and stays there (without tangling other lines drifting too much). All colors work. Hook some real squid on the hooks. Big "snaps" like big baits. So do groupers, and other large, deep predators. Might use a wire leader in case of some toothy critters taking a bite. Can't say enough good things about this lure. Think some guy in Houston area hand makes these. Great design.

Cheaply made and illegal hooks for snapper.
Bent and broke on anything other than small fish. Plus the hooks are illegal J hooks, law says they need to be circle hooks for snapper. Don’t chance losing everything to fish and game.
