Q: how far apart should plants be?

If using for a ground cover plant 12"-18" apart within 2-3 years it will completely cover the ground area. For faster coverage plant 6"-8" apart - by the end of the first year will / should completely cover the bed. The smaller distance apart will require more pruning in following years. They do better with mulch the first year (or until full coverage is achieved to keep out weeds) - after that mulching would not be necessary. If you desire a longer fill in rate you can plant as much as 3-4 feet apart. They do tolerate heavy pruning even mowing when established and tolerates high foot traffic, because of this they can be hard to pull out. They also grow quicker in more shaded/morning sun areas, sun/part shade or some shade areas seem to show a little slower growth rate and are not as rich a green - but still holds up well and looks good in more sun areas - just not quite as lush and a little slower growing.

Q: Have ivy now that i want this plant to take over. Can i plant this in the ivy.

Short answer: NO. Extended answer: if you plant a lot of them then maybe.

Partial shade yes, we're in zone 5/6 too.
