They can be used to avoid blisters when hiking long distances.
I'm into some very long distance hiking (Camino de Santiago) and have seen the pain that blisters can cause. I watched a video in which an expert on the subject recommended taping your toes and blister hotspots with this tape and then wearing a thin pair of socks under some thicker hiking socks to avoid friction. It certainly worked for me. I had only one very small blister on the whole of the Camino and enjoyed all of my walk.
