Is the glass lead free?

yes, the glass is lead free-I have no problems with it.

What is the lid made out of? Any plastic?

The lid is metal, except for a plastic ball on the top. We use it almost every day on an open flame gas stove to make tea. Amazingly, the handle stays cool. We liked it so well, we bought a couple more for Christmas presents.

Is a diffuser required for a coil type electric stove top?

My stove is electric I don't use a diffuser. But then again, all I've ever done with it is boil water.

When the kettle is full, approximately how long does it take for it to come to a boil?

not sure, mine broke shortly after we got it. I would say not more than 10-15 minutes. My crazy wife packed up her glass tea kettle and took it to camp so she could have tea in the mornings ( she has a metal allergy) and it cracked on the journey.
