Q: Will these work for permanent use of sail shades?

I think that over time there might be some slipping of the height on them. You might have to adjust them every now and then.

Q: Are the tips screwed in? Or permanent?

The tips are NOT screwed. There is a aluminum tip embedded in a hard plastic insert which is glued into the end of the pole. A plastic tip is glued over the metal tip so you won't get hurt.

Q: What’s the diameter of the pole tip?

The same as any other. They fit easily into all tarp holes

Q: what is the diameter of the smallest/top extension section (not the small tip piece) ?

The approximate size is 3/4 inch but has a plastic cap with tie down loops which are larger.
