I found this: How do you know when to change the filters? Answer: Hi Dear Customer, Thank you for your inquiry about the undersink water filter system. We would recommend you to change the 1st stage per 3-6 months, the 2nd per 8-12 months, the 3rd per 12-18 months to get best filtration performance of the filter. However, the actual lifespan of the filters may highly depends on your feed water quality and your water usage frequency. Also here some tips for the change: 1. Taste- if you find the taste has changed, you may need a change 2. Water flow- if you find the water output is much smaller than before, it’s time to change the filters as well. Q: These replacement filters look much smaller than the ones that came with unit. Itʻs about 2 yrs old. Will it still fit?

I thought the same thing when I first got the replacements, but once I took one of the filter containers apart I realized they are the same as the ones inside the unit.

Q: Is it a hard water softener filter?

NO! You need a whole house softener. I have a Whirlpool softener and the filter behind that for potable water. You don't have to spend several thousands either for a whole house system. The big companies will try to sell you a $4-5K system that doesn't do any more than my Whirlpool. Their sales reps earn a very high commission. I've had the large tank ones in the past also, so I know what I'm talking about. About 4 years I got this Whirlpool for around $350.00 at Lowes. There are other similar brands. Do your homework.
