Tandy Leather Basic Hand Stitching Set 11190-00

First off I want to say the box is a lot bigger than it needs to be. I'm not sure why that is, maybe to make it seem like you're getting a lot more than you actually are? Either way I can store most of my leather working tools, mallet included, inside it, so that's not really a negative.The sewing awl was just slightly bent out of the box. It's made of relatively soft metal and bent on me after minimal use on 9oz leather. Trying to bend it back resulted in the whole needed snapping off. Thanks, Tandy.Other than the awl being total garbage, everything is fine. It's not great but it's what you'd expect for a $55 package that includes three tools, needles and thread. I'll obviously be needing a replacement awl (I'll spring for a more expensive one) and will probably replace the other pieces down the line; like I said they aren't bad, but aren't that good either.I'd still recommend this kit to a beginner doing some work on LIGHT leather, but that's it. If you have the money to buy higher quality pieces individually, or will be stitching anything around 8oz or thicker, it's not worth it. Save your money.

Spent about 20-30 minutes just trying to thread the needles provided in the kit with the also included waxed thread. Couldn't do it. Tried a thread guide, to singe the thread and pull it through the eye of the needle with hemostats to no available. Just wanted to do some repair work on the winter canvas cover of my sail boat....but not with this product.
