Her adventures are so much fun!! Review: The Original! - Amelia Bedelia is one of the many well-known children's book character I had heard of but never read. My first encounter with her was reading one of the current boring books to my son's kindergarten class. This is what happen's when you forget to bring your own book for reader of the day. The upside? It made me curious about the original Amelia Bedelia and I found the fantastic 50th anniversary edition. This edition includes the original 1963 Peggy Parish story and Fritz Siebel illustrations along with seven pages of pictures and notes describing the story's creation and information about the author and illustrator. The physical book itself is lovely. A large 9x11 size with soft cream pages and crisply printed black ink illustration shaded with gray and highlighted with a medium green. If you aren't already familiar with Amelia, she is a literal minded maid who uses dusting powder to "dust" the furniture, a pen and paper to "draw" the drapes, and ribbon and lace to "trim" the fat on the steak. It's a vintage story so some things are old fashion and out of date. I had to explain "drawing" the drapes and "dressing" the chicken to my five year old. Mr Rogers, Amelia's employer, is smoking a pipe in the first picture and there are several pictures of Mrs. Rogers wearing a fox stole (you know the ones with a full fox head). Also in the end notes there is a picture of Peggy Parish's "Let's Be Indian" - cringe worthy. Really though, it's a funny story and my son belly laughs through most of it. It's a treat be able to buy a new copy of a vintage classic.

How could Amelia Badelia be anything but 5-Stars?!
A book for all times and all ages. Innocent, fun and spot on. Amelia Badelia is as wonderful and quirky now as when I read her stories 55 years ago. A fun generational book that points out the riciulousness of the American vernacular - in a most charming children's book.

A Classic that is Still A Hit
We (me and my 4 year old) LOVE amelia bedelia. We made our own "dressed" chicken with foil overalls after reading. She laughed and laughed and laughed. Glad to know my favorites from when i was little are still a hit. it takes me back!

A Classic!
My mom and I bought this book for my brother and sister-in-law when they were expecting my niece. Since they were going to name her Amelia, we decided to use it for their baby shower as a sign-in book. It was a big hit with the guests and my sister-in-law loved it. Now my niece has a wonderful keepsake with messages from her parents' friends inside of this beautiful, classic story. The book was high quality and we bought it off of here because it was very hard to find it in stores, including book stores. I highly recommend it.

Excellent classic book for small children. Both of my kids love the double entendres, and it gives them a chance to be "smarter" than Amelia.

Most magical house sitter since Mary Poppins!

Bought it for the artist of "A Fly Went By". I get the joke, its just not very funny and too over-the-top, even for a child. The artistic style is dated and not very interesting.

You probably read Amelia Bedlia as a child. They are great fun but you will need to explain about people having maids or help in the house! Just not something children would come across very often these days! But the play on words and how Amelia gets it wrong but is an amazing smiley happy face all through. Great for young readers to understand double meanings on words!
