Hughes' poetry here is alive and driving.
Hughes makes Aeschylus come alive like no other translation I am aware of. His poetry flies off the page and is eminently actable.

Classical Drama production
I got this book for my classical drama production at university, the translation is brilliant! Ted Hughes has a great knack for writing beautifully lyrical works which is still manageable to read and not to complex. I did have to read it a second time before I understood the whole plot, but I imagine that could have more to do with the fact I read it all hung over on a dreary Sunday afternoon that it has to do with the writing. The plot is pretty standard of the Greek tragedy but has become a favourite of mine, loving the third part in particular which is a introduction to an established justice system by the kick ass Goddess Athene who basically comes in and saves everyone's behinds (not that I'm biased as I played that part or anything haha) It is a great classic play, and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Greeks, Mythology or of course Drama/English lit.

Lightweight but readable.
It was written as a rattling good yarn but for me was too far from the original.

Wonderful translation. We staged it in Greece and the actors had a lot to work with. Rich and profound.
