The Technique of the Professional Make-Up Artist

The writing gets in the way of the advice.
This book has a lot of very useful information in it. While it's not for a beginner, I as a beginner am learning a lot from it. I appreciate the period section. However, I'm glad I bought it used because of the writing quality. The author is downright condescending toward "everyday" commercial make-up and (it seems to me) anyone who is not a makeup artist but nevertheless uses makeup in some form. I understand that this book is about PROFESSIONAL makeup, not amateur or costume, but unless you're already an established professional with a full kit of professional cosmetics you are probably going to feel insulted.I understand that once I am a professional I will need to have a thick skin, but I don't pay people to degrade me, which is what I feel this book does.

Must have
I don't know any professional makeup artist that hasn't owned/read this book. Its been around forever so a few products are a little out dated and there are more things on the market today, but all the basics you will ever need are here and well written and easy to understand; in my opinion a must have for any makeup artist, no matter what the skill level.

Geared towards professionals
This book is definately geared towards the professional makeup artist. I'm an avid Halloween costumer and wanted to try special effects makeup but this book was over my head. The author assumes that you have some basic knowledge of makeup technique and the lack of color photos makes it impossible for the novice to figure out what he's talking about. I'm thinking of purchasing Laura Thudium's makeup book to learn the basics and then hopefully this book will be more useful.

Thie book is more for the stage artist.
This book had excellent tips on lighting and the angles of the face, but I didn't find enough information on application of makeup for daily wear. I was looking for a book that would help me with tips - much like a professional makeup artist that was doing your makeup for a special event. The book contained period makeup and total transformation character makeup information. I liked Kevin Aucoin's Face Forward and Making Faces better.

Not what I wanted
This wasn't what I thought it was going to be, but my sister, who is into theatrical make up, liked it very much. I gave it to her, and she said it covered a lot of info she was getting in a class she was taking. She's into the gory, bloody make up of Halloween.

A staple for theater arts
This book is interesting for those who would like to know how to do costume makeup or build a mask. I think that every high school should have this for their theater department. This may start a surge in creative talent.

Great for television and movie makeup!
Fantastic book! A must have for those makeup artist looking to get into the television and movie industry. My only complaint is that the pictures are all in black and white, but it is an older book so that's to be expected.

Buen libro pero llegó tarde
Llegó un par de días más tarde de lo que esperaba y, aunque su contenido no defrauda le faltan imágenes y algo de color, si estamos hablando de maquillaje creo que es importante poder ver resultados.

Good for a collection, not for practical use today.
The book is very dated an not up with trends from the past 10-15 years. Also the pictures are few and are back and white.Good for a collection but not all that practical for new upcoming artists. (I've been in the industry for 18 years).
