Reading the Psalms with Luther

I am reading a different book that walks you through the year in the Psalms that I'm not super-pleased with (by Tim Keller), so I look forward to what Martin Luther had to say, since I grew up Lutheran.

When I was still new to Christ, I struggled with the Book of Psalms, some parts were a complete mystery to me. However, I kept pressing on, I asked God to help me understand it better, then one fine day, I came across this amazing jewel. Luther's astute biblical analysis at the beginning of each Psalm and a short, beautiful prayer concluding it, are a wonderful addition. It is just the right amount to enhance the understanding and insights that can be extracted from the Psalms, in my personal opinion. Now, I absolutely love the Book of Psalms, I can't get enough of it!

Let me preface this by saying that I am definitely not a Lutheran. With that said, this is a wonderful book whether you're Lutheran or not.This book contains the following for each Psalm:- Brief intro to each- Full ESV text- Markings to help you sing or chant them (if you've never done this I recommend you try it)- One or more suggested prayers on the same theme as the textI don't always agree with Luther's interpretation but still find his summaries helpful and they make me think about the text. The prayers are beautifully written and very Gospel-centric.If you have trouble knowing what to pray about, you struggle with regular prayer, or you sometimes find your mind wandering while you're praying, this book will help you. Even if none of this applies to you it'll still be helpful. This book can be both "training wheels" for people struggling with this spiritual discipline and a tool for people who are aren't.I've challenged myself to pray through the Psalms regularly and it's been very helpful to my prayer life and spiritual growth.

This has become my daily psalter. Luther's notes help to understand the psalms better and the tones are very decent and you can pick which one you wish to use (or you can just read it). 5 stars.

Start my morning with psalms everyday because it’s Gods holy precious Words in prayer for us!Forgiveness of our sins and helps me keep my sanity in a chaotic sinful world and keep focused on God, Christ!

a) I really, really like the short commentary by Martin Luther with each psalm. His comments have been translated from the original German into clear, modern English. The Psalms are in the English Standard Version (an easy-to-read, accurate translation). I am currently using this for my daily devotions, and hope to learn a lot.b) The book arrived in absolutely perfect condition, and the paper is of high quality.

We do recommend this book, it helps us deepen into the message Our Lord wanted us to know.A message for all generations.
