Outdoor ResearchFrostline Hat

Obviously I got this for outdoor activities in for colder weather (i.e. winter in Maine) Always had one of those fur lined trapper hats. Was looking for something a little more streamlined that wouldn't look too weird wearing in public. LOLOrdered this hat and love it. I will say that when It first arrived I was a little put off by how thin and flimsy it felt compared to what I was use to wearing. I had serious doubts that it would be warm enough. Well, after wearing it a few times I fell in love with it. Light as a feather, blocks wind like a brick wall, and even sheds water as well as any rain hat I own. I generally wear a little beanie under it which I do with any other winter hat as well. The beanie is simply a little skull cap, actually its sold as a helmet liner. Thin, but adds a lot of warmth to any hat. I haven't tried using the stow away face mask as of yet. But If I'm stuck out in some really cold wind then I'm sure it will be handy to have.Just to clarify how much I love this hat, I recently gave my trapper hat away. Don't need it any longer.LOL

I bought this hat for an ice climbing trip in colorado (Feburary). It was awesome! In fact, it was so warm that I usually didn't wear it during the day when temps were in the 20's to lower 30's. I put it on sometimes when it got really windy and I was standing still between climbs or when belaying with the ear flaps rolled up. It was way too warm to wear in those conditions while very active. At night when the temps dropped to the teens or single digits this hat kept my head & ears toasty. I never used the face shield (which stows away nicely) but it's nice to know that it was there. I have a plan to climb Mt. Washington this winter & I plan to take this hat as it seems to me that it will likely perform very well there. As a side note, you can adjust your helmet to fit over this but the brim makes it a bit akward. If you're looking for something to wear under a helmet OR has other options that would probably work better like their alpine hat or wintertrek hat (which I also own and love).

I eyeballed this hat at a store then found it online at a little better, no a lot better price so I went with the better price. The first time I saw this hat and tried it on I wanted it. It's incredible although I've yet to wear it outside yet. I don't know where to start with how much I like this hat. It's super warm insulating material is very cozy - but not bulky or heavy. The shell is made of Pertex Quantum which is one of the best fabrics out there. It's very light and has an awesome hand. I really like the insulated ear flaps that can be flipped out of the way. The lined flip down brim and the pull out facemask are incredible. They took a classic hat style to new heights and made it light and compact for winter backpackers like myself. I've worn this hat on at least 50 climbs in the Northern Sierras and love it! I had to order another one as my first blew off my head in 70 mph winds at the summit of Pyramid Peak ( my fault for not using the chin strap). It's warm without being too hot and totally blocks the wind, and the hidden face mask is a great feature when the cold wind really blows. The Velcro on the chin straps holds the hat in place well and this cap doesn't seem to muffle my hearing like some beanies do. I find the fit to be true and it can be pulled down to feel really snug. I never head up the the mountains in the winter without this hat as it is light and easily packable. You won't be disappointed 😀

I love this hat and I hate this hat.Right out of the package, I initially thought it looked flimsy and cheap...not the warm winter hat of my dreams. It looked a little dorky, too, but honestly, most hats do.After I got over my initial reaction and started wearing it, my opinion immediately changed. I've lived in Chicago for 12 years and this is by far the coldest winter I've had here. That said, I can't understand how ANYONE could find this hat NOT warm enough. With ambient temps hovering near -20 and wind chills kissing -40, this hat did the trick. I tried on a couple of thicker, warmer trapper hats while shopping and honestly, they were TOO warm. Practical only if you're working outside for hours on end in sub-zero temps. Another great feature of this hat is the built-in face mask. While other people wrangle a scarf AND hat, I've got one self-contained tool that functions as both. Good stuff.So why do I hate this hat? Because the velcro closures that hold the chin strap are junk. As others have noted, after a handful of uses, the velcro no longer sticks and the chin straps no longer stay fastened. The only reason this hasn't driven my COMPLETELY crazy is because it's been so cold here this winter than I've used the face mask nearly every day, and the velcro on that seems to be holding up better. I've called OR about this and even considered returning the hat, but in the end decided to hold onto it because all other features are great. Once the weather warms up a little and I know I won't need the hat for a few days, I'm going to take it to the tailor to have a better piece of velcro installed. On a $50 hat, this should NOT be necessary. Whomever is in charge of testing designs over at OR was asleep at the switch the day this got approved.Great hat, poor attention to design details by the team at OR.Pros-warm without being hot (important for anyone like me who takes public transit and is in and out of cold conditions)-comfortable-folds small-face mask built in-visor to keep snow out of your eyesCons-not the MOST stylish option-velcro closures are absolute junk and WILL need to be replaced by anyone who intends to keep this hat

When you wear this you don't feel any air movement around your head. Its like a personal face bubble, I love it! Not very stylish when it's only half done up but I've never been disappointed with Outdoor Research for cold protection!
