A must read for submarine enthsiasts.. Very elaborate design and technical insighst of the cold war era submarines of either sides... May be one of the few texts available which gives such a detailed analysis of a soviet submarine.. Fully enjoyed reading it..

Cold war submarines takes a deep dive into the details of conventional and nuclear submarines in service with NATO and the Warsaw Pact from the end of World War 2 to the present day. Especially appreciated is the in-depth information on Soviet submarines which is hard to find anywhere.An expensive book, but well worth the price for the information it provides that is rarely available anywhere else.

An excellent summary of Cold War submarine forces with coverage of US and Soviet submarines but no other nations, which is the only caveat on an otherwise highly acclaimed and genuinely useful book. Good as a reference source and as a book to browse, or to be read from cover to cover.Had it not had the subtitle "The Design and Construction of U.S. and Soviet Submarines", I would have given it 3 stars which would not reflect in truth the value of this book. Published in 2004, it is somewhat dated in content but not a lot has changed in details regarding the subject and for that it is highly valuable.There is still a market for books on Cold War-era submarines of NATO, Warsaw Pact and other aligned powers and of course China's burgeoning force-projection provides plenty of material for a further book on these other countries. However, the book in question here is laser-focused on doing what it says on the cover and for that it certainly deserves five stars.

In the days before the Internet it was not easy to get Information about the GUPPY Programm and how the US and the USSR used the captured german development oft the XXI submarine. This book givers an extremely good overview of these programs and the future development of the submarine weapon, even branching into (neber built) submarine transports and tankers.Who has read Polmars brilliant books about Aircraft carriers knows what he has to suspect.

Un'opera che analizza nei minimi particolare l'evoluzione dei sottomarini della guerra fredda dal punto di vista tecnologico e non solo.L'opera vuole infatti chiedersi quali sono le ragioni che portarono a diverse scelte operative nell'ambito della marine sottomarine sovietiche e americane.Un opera chiara e oggettiva da non perdere anche per coloro che nutrono minore interesse verso i sottomarini.Eccellente

タイトル通り冷戦時代における潜水艦、特に米ソの潜水艦に焦点を当てた著作である。期間的には1946年から2000年代前後まで、つまり冷戦時代だけではなく、ソ連崩壊後についても一部扱っている。A4 400ページ以上の大作だが、全体の約2割はAppendixなので、読む部分は330ページ程である。それでもボリューム的に大きいが、下名はKindle版を購入したので、負荷感はそれほどでもなかった。冷戦時代の米ソの潜水艦ということで、日本でもよく知られた内容が多く書かれている。米原潜ノーチラス、ポラリス原潜、スタージョン級、ロス級、シーウルフ級、ヴァージニア級、ソ連のウィスキー級、ゴルフ級、ヴィクター級、デルタ級、タイフーン級、アルファ級、キロ級、アクラ級、オスカー級等については、改めて英語で読み直さなくてもWikipedia等で調べられる範囲である。本書を読んで興味深かったのは、ソ連潜水艦の飛躍的な静粛性向上と、それに対する西側海軍の焦燥である。それまで静粛性の分野で東側を圧倒していた西側潜水艦が、1980年代に入って急激にその優位を失い、80年代後半に登場したシエラ級、アクラ級に至って遂に西側と肩を並べるに至った。ロス級後期型やトラファルガー級といった西側第3世代原潜とアクラ級原潜との静粛性については、「それでも西側が少し優っている」とか「アクラ級が追い抜いた」とか評価が別れる所だが、いずれにしても「西側と肩を並べるところまで来た」というのは確かだろう。その他、未成の揚陸用潜水艦や潜水空母に関する記述も興味深かった。前者については、専用艦という形では実現しなかったが、旧式したSSBN等を改造して特殊部隊用の揚陸用潜水艦として実現している。後者は、WW2戦前戦中の日独等の例を除けば遂に実現しなかったが、戦後にもそのような計画が存在していたことは興味深い。米海軍では「潜水可能な飛行艇」等というまるでSF作品のような機体が計画されていたというのだから驚きだ。艦船研究家としては世界的に著名なノーマン・ポルマー氏の作品であり、データ的にも比較的新しいので、戦後の潜水艦史に興味のある方であれば、購入して損のない著作だと思う。
